Watch the Opening Night of TED in Movie Theaters Tonight!

Posted on February 15, 2016 at 3:52 pm

For the first time ever, the global phenomenon known simply as TED — with talks about ideas that are transforming the world — is coming to movie theaters worldwide in partnership with By Experience. On February 15 in North America and February 16 for the rest of the world, the general public will have the previously unthinkable opportunity to experience the “opening night” of TED’s legendary annual conference, alongside its equally legendary VIP audience. Hosted by TED’s curator Chris Anderson, the approximately 90-minute theatrical screening of this event will debut the first evening of TED2016: Dream (taking place in Vancouver, Canada from February 15-22), featuring world-renowned thinkers, artists and storytellers who will share their “ideas worth spreading” about the greatest dreams we are capable of dreaming. What emerges is a spirit of wonder and optimism that represents the world at its best.

Tonight’s featured speakers include:

• 10-year-old writer Ishita Katyal will share her dreams for the future she is inheriting.
• Futurist Astro Teller from Google will paint a gripping picture of the future that he and his team are inventing.
• Riccardo Sabatini, will talk about the future of identity in the age of genetics.
• TV mega-producer Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” “How to Get Away With Murder”) will share her ideas about reviving passion for work and family.
• Dan Pallotta, one of TED’s all-time all-stars, will inspire with a talk on the power of dreaming.
• Plus spectacular performances from legendary choreographer Bill T. Jones and superstar composer AR Rahman.

A Last Thought for the New Year: Write a Letter to a Stranger

Posted on December 31, 2014 at 3:57 pm

Hannah Brencher has a story to tell about how she helped herself by helping others — through the almost-lost art of real letters on paper.  Make 2015 the year you write some letters — thank you notes, condolence notes, someone in the military, an elderly person, or a letter to a stranger whose life will be brightened by finding something in the mail that isn’t a bill or an ad.

Model Cameron Russell on What She Really Looks Like

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 8:00 am

Cameron Russell admits she won “a genetic lottery”: she’s tall, pretty and an underwear model. But don’t judge her by her looks. In this fearless talk, she takes a wry look at the industry that had her looking highly seductive at barely 16-years-old.  This is an important reality check for girls — and boys — who may feel an endless gulf between the way they look and the way they “should” look.

Thank You

Posted on October 1, 2008 at 8:00 am

The two most powerful words I know are “thank you.” A simple statement of acknowledgment and gratitude transforms the person who says it as well as the person who hears it. If every one of us just added five “Thank yous” to each day we could change the world. So many souls shrivel waiting for some recognition. I love this poem by Jan Struther:

Hard words will break no bones:
But more than bones are broken
By the inescapable stones
Of fond words left unspoken.

Watch this clip by Laura Trice from Ted Talks about the power of saying “Thank you.” Some people will object to her suggestion that we ask for thanks, but what she is saying is that it can be a gift to those closest to us to confide in them about what we are proud of. She is not telling us to be needy or demanding. She is suggesting that we share ourselves and let those we love share in return.

A similar idea comes from writer Carolyn See, who recommends writing a “charming note” every single day to help launch a writing career. She suggests you write to authors and editors whose work you like to let them know — specifically — how much you appreciate them. To be charming, a note must be hand-written on beautiful note paper and it must not ask for anything. It’s a good idea to leave out most details about you and your aspirations because that is an implied request for a favor.

I think a daily “charming note” is a great exercise for anyone with or without a specific ambition. The discipline of gratitude is essential for all of us but we often feel we are too busy or worry that it makes us too vulnerable.

So thanks to all of you who visit this site and especially to those who post comments, whether praise or complaint. I am very grateful to you all. And here is one more story I love about the importance of expressing appreciation.
