Far from scientific, but still fun to read about: A survey, conducted just after the Oscars, collected responses to a single, fill-in-the-blank question from more than 10,500 movie watchers spanning five different languages in the UK, Europe, Japan, and the U.S., which were then machine translated and analyzed in minutes by OdinText, a text analytics software platform. The movie they picked: “Titanic.”  Number 2: “Star Wars” (all of them).

Tribute: James Horner

Posted on June 23, 2015 at 5:22 pm

One of the greatest movie composers of all time, James Horner, died this week in a plane crash. His compositions added enormous depth and emotion to some of the all-time critical and audience triumphs, including the movie that broke the box office record, “Titanic,” and the movie that broke that record, “Avatar.” His films include grand, sweeping epics, historical sagas, science fiction adventures, intimate dramas, and even an animated film for families (“An American Tail”). Vanity Fair has a very thoughtful tribute with some of the best examples of his work. He will be sorely missed.

May his memory be a blessing.

A Night to Remember — The Other Titanic Movie

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 3:14 pm

On the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic this week, I want to recommend the other Titanic movie, “A Night to Remember” with Clifton Webb.

And here is the striking memorial in Washington DC, put up by the women of America in honor of the men who died so that women and children on the ship could be saved.  Many thanks to photographer Ron Cogswell for granting permission to use this image via Flickr.

The Only Shot James Cameron Changed in “Titanic” for the Re-release

Posted on April 3, 2012 at 12:59 pm

Thanks to my pal Brandon Fibbs for sharing the story.  James Cameron decided not to pull a “Han shot first” George Lucas move and make any tweaks to “Titanic” for the 3D re-release.  Except for one change.

There is one shot that I fixed. It’s because Neil deGrasse Tyson, who is one of the U.S.’ leading astronomers, sent me quite a snarky email saying that, at that time of year, in that position in the Atlantic in 1912, when Rose is lying on the piece of driftwood and staring up at the stars, that is not the star field she would have seen, and with my reputation as a perfectionist, I should have known that and I should have put the right star field in. So I said, ‘All right, you son of a b**ch, send me the right stars for the exact time, 4.20am on April 15, 1912, and I’ll put it in the movie.’ So that’s the one shot that has been changed.
