Interview: Vera Farmiga of ‘Higher Ground’

Vera Farmiga (“The Departed,” “Up in the Air”) directed and stars in a new film based on the memoir by Carolyn S. Briggs, Higher Ground: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost.  As she spoke to a small group of reporters in a Georgetown hotel, it was clear that she shares her character’s passionate yearning for an intimate connection with the Almighty.

I began by asking her about her character’s hair, which seems to reflect not just the changing fashions over the decades covered in the film, but her spiritual and emotional state as well.  “It was three different time periods.  The church changes.  It goes from worshipping outside to worshipping in basements, hallways, annexes, to a proper, steeple-topped church.  As the hippies turn into yuppies, so do the hairstyles.  Her hair starts off wild and carefree and long and tangled.  And passionate.  And then there are the trials and tribulations and ebbs and flows of her path, and she engages in spiritual warfare and her hair also has its phases.  Childbirth, and then she gets shorter.  We did a perm curl – it gets corrupted.  It gets poisoned — by a home perm!  And then by the end it’s a looser wave, gentler.”

She admitted that this book was an unusual choice for her debut as a director.  “It chose me.  I really feel that way.  I tried to wriggle out of its grasp, several times.  Every time I tried, something else would happen that made it unstoppable….It touched me in divinely mysterious ways.  It slayed me in the spirit.  I loved this woman’s yearning to be passionate in her faith and all her relationships.  That yearning is such a holiness to me that it touched me in a very deep way.  I wanted to defend her journey….It was so juicy to me….I had a lot of ideas I wanted to bring into the film, ideas about music and praise and worship and joy.”  It began to come together when her mentor, Deborah Granick, agreed to advise her and John Hawkes (from Granick’s “Winter’s Bone” agreed to appear in the film. “Before I knew it, I was on the set, having to deliver the last speech first.”  And after that, she relaxed and enjoyed it.

“A story about God tends to make people tremble,” she said, “as the Almighty should.  We all have our personal concepts of that that means.  But that three-letter word makes people quake, especially in Hollywood.”  But she had the support of her producers (including her husband) who “totally vibed with my vision, no mockery or judgment, just to look at how arduous that spiritual road is, how bumpy.  No matter what your religion is, what your spiritual tenets are, what your idea of God is, we’re all on the same human team, trying to transcend self and look upwards for healing and holiness.”

She spoke of learning from directors like Granik, Anthony Minghella, and Martin Scorsese about the spirit they bring to their work, “their leadership, their approach, their wholesomeness, their joy, the good cheer that they spread as they attack their missions.  In order for it to be a ‘holy experience,’ everyone’s got to be invested.  You have to treat them like kings and queens and show them you are truly grateful.”

Farmiga cast her real-life sister as the younger version of her character.  “We have the benefit of genetic similarity, so we did not have to do much as far as matching our performances.  We move in similar ways because of the house we grew up in, probably even the Ukranian folk-dancing!”

I asked her about the portrayal of the main character’s friendship in the film.  “I’ve learned so much from my best friends and they demand so much of me and inspire me in the ways that make me me.  The character is able to be her best carnal self and her best spiritual self because of her friendship with Annika.  We wanted to make it the most passionate and pure relationship — and then it gets taken away so she can find it within herself, the same energy, the same approach with the rest of her relationships, including her relationship with God.”

The tone of the film is respectful of all of its characters and their journeys.  “My heart and my intent, indigenous to my personality is not cynicism, but compassion and serenity and gentleness and respect.  I’m curious, what draws me into a story is recognizing my humanity, my imperfections, telling a story about struggle.  This is not a general statement about Christianity; this is a moment this woman found herself in.  We are still finding our voices.”

Audition Online for the ‘Christmas Story’ Musical

Ralphie will be not only waiting for his Little Orphan Annie decoder ring and hoping for a Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle but also singing and dancing in a new musical production based on the classic movie (which was based on Jean Shepherd’s stories about his childhood).  Co-producer Peter Billingsly, the original Ralphie, is now looking for kids to star in the show’s five-city tour over the holiday season.  You can audition online via LetItCast.  The audition will not be made public — the only people who will see it are the creative team doing the casting.

If you are interested, here’s what you do:

1.     Record a video of yourself singing a brief song that is rhythmic and that shows your voice, high notes, and personality. A classic Broadway or a holiday song is suggested and it should be no more than 90 seconds.

2.     Get a recent digital picture or headshot of yourself and your resume. (If you don’t have a resume, just prepare a brief paragraph about yourself in a Word Document.)

3.     Go to www.AChristmasStoryTheMusical/casting and follow the link to register with the online casting site, LetItCast®, and follow their instructions to submit your video, photo, and information.

Casting directors are seeking to fill the iconic lead role of Ralphie and his troupe of friends and classmates, including: Randy, Flick, Schwartz, Scut Farcus, Grover Dill, Mary Beth, and Esther Jane.   They are looking for children, between 8 – 13 who are extraordinary actors, singers, and dancers. The production seeks young actors of all ethnicities who are 4’ 11” and shorter. (Boys, your voice should not have changed yet.)

Southern Accents in Movies: The Good, The Bad, The Very Ugly

When I saw New York Magazine’s Vulture blog did a slideshow about the worst Southern accents in the movies, with clips of real-life speakers from the actual towns that were supposed to be represented, I was delighted to see some recognition that not all Southerners sound like L’il Abner and that there are distinctive differences based on region and culture.  As we say in the South, bless their hearts.

My own pick for the worst Southern accent I ever heard on screen was in a British miniseries I saw on PBS many years ago.  I genuinely thought the character had a speech impediment.  Vulture picks Nicolas Cage for their all-time worst, but I’d go for John Travolta (“A Love Song for Bobby Long”).  Best?  Ms. Meryl Streep, of course, in “The Seduction of Joe Tynan.”  She said she based her honeyed tones on Dinah Shore.

Happy 100th Birthday, Lucille Ball!

Today we celebrate the 100th anniversary birthday of one of the most talented, hardest-working, and best-loved comic performers of all time, Lucille Ball.  She insisted on having her then-husband, bandleader Desi Arnaz, as her co-star in what became a comedy classic from the early days of television, I Love Lucy.  And Arnaz insisted on putting the show on film, very unusual in that era when no one was giving any thought to re-broadcasting television programs.  While many comic gems of that era have been lost, “Lucy” is indeed loved all over the world and being shown and appreciated on some station just about any moment of every day.

The complete serieshas been re-issued this week on DVD in honor of her centenary.  Lucille Ball talks to Dick Cavett about two of her best-remembered episodes, the stomping on the grapes and her “mirror scene” with Harpo Marx (a tribute to the brilliant mirror scene in the Marx Brothers film, Duck Soup).

This is my all-time favorite Lucy episode, partly because what happened was an accident and I love the way she just went with it.  The expressions on her face and William Holden’s are priceless!

Before she was a zany redhead on television, Ball showed her acting skill in some movie roles.  Here she holds her own with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in the witty Washington wartime romance, “Without Love.”

Ball’s biographer said her best performance was in the wonderful film, Yours, Mine and Ours (infinitely better than the Steve Martin remake).  It was her second co-starring role with Henry Fonda, based on the true story of a woman with eight children who married a man with ten.  I love the way this fan tribute combines the clips with scenes from their film together, a heart-breaking Damon Runyon drama called The Big Street about a disabled showgirl and the busboy who makes an enormous sacrifice to make her dream come true.

Be sure to tune into Sirius Radio’s special tribute to Lucille Ball from Lucy Fest, the annual gathering in her hometown of Jamestown, NY.  Redhead Radio will launch at 12:00 am ET on August 6, 2011—the day Lucy would have celebrated her 100th birthday—on SiriusXM channel 82, taking over SiriusXM’s RadioClassics for two days. SiriusXM’s Greg Bell will host Redhead Radio featuring the festival’s headliner, Joan Rivers.  Sirius will broadcast dozens of episodes of her classic 1940s radio comedy series My Favorite Husband, which inspired l Love Lucy; an interview with stand-up comedian Paula Poundstone—a featured performer at this year’s fest— about the influence Lucy has had on her career; and interviews with Lucy impersonators, experts, historians, event organizers and fans at Lucy Fest. The channel will chronicle fan participation in “Be a Lucy,” the attempt set the world’s record for the most people dressed as Lucy Ricardo in one place at one time. Additional content includes Lucy’s guest-starring role on the classic radio dramatic series Suspense; radio versions of her films “Fancy Pants” (with Bob Hope) and “Dark Corner” and interviews Lucy did with legendary personalities Abbott & Costello and Bob Hope on their classic radio shows.

Interview: Brendan Wayne of ‘Cowboys & Aliens’

Brendan Wayne of “Cowboys & Aliens” is the grandson of movie legend John Wayne.  He talked to me about visiting his grandfather’s movie sets and acting and doing his own stunts in one of this year’s most anticipated blockbusters.  And it was a blast to compare notes with him on our favorite John Wayne films.

I’m so excited about your movie!

We’re in the same boat!  I love the story.  I love the mash-up of the two genres.  It’s a classic Western told the only way we could tell it today since you can’t really do cowboys and Indians without insulting history and culture.  You get to tell the tried and true Western in such an exciting new way, the story we love to tell about the human spirit overcoming greater odds.  It’s really fun, Daniel Craig jumping, riding, and shooting, Harrison Ford, in and of itself making the movie exciting.

The movie takes place in the 1870’s, a small town run by Harrison’s character, Col. Woodrow Dolarhyde.  And Daniel is Jake, a kind of a loner drifter who seems to have amnesia, and we proceed to be attacked.  We don’t know what it is and it is very time period specific so we don’t have electricity or cars or computers to fight back with.  And then these flying objects come in and we have to figure out what’s going on and then take care of business.  That’s where it really gets fun, when we go after them on our horses.

And you did your own stunts!

Every single one of them.  I have to thank two people, Bobby Aldridge for helping me get on a horse and really understand what a stunt guy does and Terry Leonard for making sure I didn’t look like an idiot and making sure I didn’t make my grand-dad look like a jerk. Terry was second unit director and the first film he ever worked on was “Rio Lobo” with my grandfather.  He took care of me like a big brother and made sure that I was safe and willing to challenge myself.  I was riding flat-out on that horse getting cactus stuck on me but having a lot of fun.  I did a lot of stunts that were really just dumb, but it was great.

But you were an experienced rider already, right?

I would never denigrate those real cowboys out there by saying I was experienced.  I had been around cowboys but this was a whole other level of riding.  Taking on these things was a whole different level of physical demand and those guys really helped me understand what it is to be a stunt man.  I barely scratched the surface but a bunch of stunt guys when I did my bigger stunt (I can’t tell you the details!) shook my hand and said they were proud.  I was really proud that they acknowledged it.  You don’t get their respect unless it is the real deal.

I also had a bar fight with Daniel Craig.  He and Olivia Wilde were just great about wanting to do their own stunts.  It was pretty amazing.

How did it feel to look in the mirror and see yourself in cowboy gear?

Our costume designer, Mary Zophres, is incredible.  She was up for an Oscar last year for “True Grit.”  For wardrobe, you just hope it will fit and work right, but she added so much, really helps you create the character, helped the story.  We were able to step into another time period and understand what it was like to wear those clothes and how it affects you.  She was fantastic.

What are your favorite of your grandfather’s movies?

The Shootist,” because he was so dang good in that.  It was his last film and I visited him on the set.  “The Cowboys,” “The Quiet Man,” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” is always at the top of my list.  I still am amazed at how good he was.  “Liberty Valance” is such a great story about doing the right thing, not always being the right guy but doing the right thing.
