List: Rainy Movies

Douglas Howe has a great list of rain scenes in movies over on Idol Chatter, including two of my favorites, “Singin’ in the Rain” with Gene Kelly and “Say Anything” with John Cusack.

Cusack for some reason is always getting drenched in movies. You could fill a whole list of great rain scenes just with Cusack performances.

A guilty pleasure of mine is the last dance number — in the rain — in “Step Up 2 the Streets.”

I love the rain scene in “Garden State.” And one of the best dance numbers ever is “Isn’t it a Lovely Day to be Caught in the Rain” with Astaire and Rogers in “Top Hat.” Oh, it is a very lovely day indeed.

  1. The scene in Daredevil with Matt and Elektra on the roof.
The terrifying scene in the Last Wave where David’s house is destroyed by a rainstorm, and the earlier hailstorm.
The climax of Magnolia, if it counts.
The final scenes of Look Both Ways.

  2. Don’t forget the very romantic rain scene at the end of “Breakfast at Tiffanys.” There is also a pretty good rain scene at the end of “Four Weddings and a Funeral.”
And there is at least one (or is it two?) rain scenes in “The Goodbye Girl.” Of course, none hold a candle to “Singing in the Rain,” but then again, that is a perfect moment.

  3. Do you call 5 measly movies a “Great List of Rain Scenes”? You can tell that Idol Chatter isn’t a movie column. I’ve never heard of a film critic yet who could sit down and be quiet without citing at least 10 or 15 movies.
PS– can any of your readers tell me what is up with that doofy scene with John Cusack holding the boom box up for his girlfriend? Do girls like that stuff?

  4. The popularity of the iconic image of Lloyd Dobler holding up the boom box playing “In Your Eyes” should be your answer, iorek. There’s even a music group called “Lloyd Dobler Effect” — though I think they just play regular instruments! Thanks for a great comment.

  5. This kiss between Spider-Man and MJ. (Can’t believe I remembered the Daredevil scene and forgot that!)

  6. How about the wonderful scene in the rain, with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, in the movie The Quiet Man? One of the most romantic scenes!!
