New on Quibi: A Hilarious, Exciting, Heartwarming Remix of The Princess Bride

No movie is more beloved than The Princess Bride, with a screenplay by William Goldman based on his book and an all-star cast including Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Chris Sarandon, and of course Billy Crystal and Carol Kane. It has everything: romance, adventure, a gorgeous score, villainous villains and heroic heroes. It’s close to perfect.

And everyone knows it so well that it is a perfect candidate for a pandemic-era at-home remake to raise money for the World Central Kitchen, “food first responders” whose programs include their clean cookstoves initiative, culinary training programs, and social enterprise ventures that empower communities and strengthen economies.

Some of the biggest stars in the world and some of the hottest up-and-coming newcomers slip in and out of the roles using whatever locations and props and costumes they have at home. It reminds me of the “Sweded” movies in “Be Kind Rewind,” one of my favorites. And one of that movie’s stars, Jack Black, shows up along with Hugh Jackman, Keegan Michael Key, Penelope Cruz, some of the movie’s original cast, and, in the final moment, one of the most touching appearances of the year.

It is pure delight. Now excuse me, I need to go back and re-watch the original.

as you wish

Fans of The Princess Bride, which means pretty much everyone, will love the new book from Cary Elwes (Westley), who takes us behind the scenes for the inside story of the making of the film, from his nervous audition (his imitation of Fat Albert saved the day) to the most dedicated fans (one had “As you wish”tattooed on her neck and ask him to sign his name below it so she could get that tattooed as well).  As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride has interviews with screenwriter William Goldman, director Rob Reiner, and the other members of the cast, who share their favorite memories of the magical moments behind and in front of the camera.  You can follow Elwes on Twitter at @cary_elwes or keep up with him on WhoSay.

25th Anniversary Edition of “The Princess Bride”

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 5:00 am

One of the most beloved — and most irresisitibly quotable — movies of all time has a beautiful 25th anniversary re-release. It’s The Princess Bride, written by William Goldman, directed by Rob Reiner, and starring Robin Wright, Carey Elwes, Chris Sarandon, and Mandy Patinkin.  Members of the cast got together at the New York Film Festival this week to reminisce and speculate about a possible sequel.  According to TheMarySue, Goldman said, “I’m desperate to make it and write it and I don’t know how…. I would love to make it, more than anything else I’ve not written.”  Here’s a reunion from earlier this year.

EW: Reunions, Featuring ‘The Princess Bride’

I always love the Entertainment Weekly “Reunions” issues, where they bring back co-stars to talk about favorite projects.  This year’s features classics like “Fatal Attraction,” “Office Space,” “The Carol Burnett Show,” and “Home Improvement” (those boys are all grown up!).  But the highlight has to be the reunion of the cast of “The Princess Bride.”  Note that Billy Crystal is wearing his hat from the movie, which he kept!

Oh, and if you love the movie, be sure to read the book, by William Goldman: The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern’s Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure.
