Weekend Box Office a New Low

Message to Hollywood: If you don’t build it, they won’t come.
The boox office results over the weekend were the lowest in a decade. At the top was last week’s horror release, “The Possession.” Not a single movie made as much as $10 million. Second place with only $6 million was another movie from the week before, “Lawless.” The major new nationwide release was Bradley Cooper’s new film “The Words,” which came in third with $5 million, a total of $1767 per theater. Action films already in theaters for a few weeks “The Expendables 2” and “The Bourne Legacy” continued to make money.
Not much to get excited about this week, either, with the best option 3D re-release of my favorite Pixar film, “Finding Nemo.” The only “new” nationwide release is the 4th chapter of “Resident Evil,” which is not screening for critics, never a good sign. After that, though, things will pick up fast. I’m especially looking forward to “The Master,” from director P.T. Anderson (“There Will Be Blood,” “Boogie Nights”), starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Joaquin Phoenix, coming out in just a few theaters this week but across the country on the 21st.

This is always a slow week – everyone’s getting their back-to-school act together.
Noted: It did not make the top ten, but the one-week re-release of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 275 IMAX screens took in $1.75 million – about $6300 per. Probably helped that it was only one week – had to go this week or miss it. (I was a little disappointed – the conversion got a little fuzzy in spots going to the larger format.)
Curious to see how the the Indiana Jones marathons scheduled for next weekend do.
On a per-screen basis, Indy owned the weekend! I love “Raiders.”
