One hundred years ago this week, British music hall star Charlie Chaplin made his first Hollywood film, the silent “It’s a Living.”
It would be a little while before his classic character of the little tramp really came together.

Here the blind girl who thought he was a millionaire when she could not see, and knew him only by the touch of his hand, discovers that he is a poor man who gave up everything to pay for the operation to restore her sight.

I also recommend Stephen Weissman’s superb biography, Chaplin: A Life.

The Ylvis song What Does the Fox Say is an international hit and there have been many parodies, like the Kerry Washington skit on SNL. I love this Quaker tribute to founder George Fox, funny, sweet, and inspiring at the same time. Many thanks to Wendy Shuman for sharing it.

The delightful Be Kind Rewind introduced the concept of “sweding” a film — remaking it with whatever low-tech, analog materials are on hand. The makers of next week’s “Lego Movie” asked fans to “swede” their trailer and you must see the adorable winners, made with so much wit, charm, and imagination. This one got first prize.
