The Razzies 2019: Holmes and Watson

The Golden Raspberry Awards, known as the Razzies, announced their winners Saturday, awarding the best of the worst in film. As usual, the Razzies tend to go for the obvious and repetitive, and sometimes blame the performers when it isn’t their fault. This year they got rather political. And there’s a bit of a surprise here with Melissa McCarthy being called out for two terrible movies, when tomorrow night she’s up for an Oscar for an excellent one.

The Razzies 2017: Batman v. Superman, Zoolander 2, and Hillary’s America

Each year at Oscar time the Golden Raspberry Awards (the Razzies) pay “tribute” to the worst films of the year.

The big “winner” this year was “Hillary’s America,” an anti-Hillary Clinton “documentary” from Dinesh D’Souza, who was awarded Razzies for worst film, worst director, and worst actress for the woman who portrayed the former first lady, Secretary of State, Senator, and Presidential candidate. D’Souza deserves some sort of good sport award for showing up to accept the honors. Other awardees included “Batman v. Superman” and “Zoolander 2.” Mel Gibson’s comeback was recognized with a “Razzie Redeemer award” for “Hacksaw Ridge.”

Awards: Independent Spirit and Razzies 2015

Tonight’s the big night. The Oscars. And that means that yesterday two of the other most significant movie awards were announced. The Independent Spirit awards are given to the people who make movies outside the studio system. These are passion projects. As Julianne Moore, tonight’s likely Best Actress winner for “Still Alice,” said when she accepted her Independent Spirit award for that same role, the budget for the film was so small that she brought her own food and underwear to the set and they didn’t have equipment to film indoors at night time. Keep in mind that her other film in 2014 was the no-chance-of-any-award-ever “Non-Stop.” Independent films are where stories are told because people want to tell them, not because they will make the most money. And the awards show is a hoot. Where else would you see an award winner take time out of thanking everyone to insult the airline that lost his luggage and also happened to be one of the event’s sponsors?

The Razzies — The Worst Films of 2012

The day before the Oscars, the Razzies are awarded to the worst films of the year. Adam Sandler, who swept the awards last year for “Jack and Jill,” managed to get only two Razzies (worst actor, worst screenplay). The last chapter of “Twilight’ was the big winner/loser this year, with Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Kristen Stewart) Worst Supporting Actor (Taylor Lautner), Worst Screen Couple (Lautner and 12 year-old Mackenzie Foy), and Worst Screen Ensemble, Worst Remake/Rip-Off or Sequel, and Worst Director. Don’t agree? You can be a Razzie voter next year.

The Spirit Awards for independent film were announced yesterday, as were the Razzie nominations for the worst films and performances of 2011. Good news for “The Artist,” not such good news for Adam Sandler, who broke the record for the most Razzie nominations, because three of his films were included along with his performances as both actor and actress (in drag) in “Jack and Jill.”
