Comic-Con: Days 3 and 4

Posted on July 25, 2017 at 2:21 pm

I attended the designer/illustrator panels: storyboard and pre-viz artists, costume designers, and production designers and interviewed the composer for the “Evil Dead” series, “Riverdale,” and “Dear White People.” I wandered into a room at random and it turned out to have Vincent D’Onofrio and Meat Loaf talking about their new SyFy series, “Ghost Wars,” followed by a panel with David Duchovny on his new Audible release, X-Files: Cold Cases. I attended Leslie Combemale‘s sensational “Women Rocking Hollywood” panel of women directors, including Angela Robinson (“Professor Marston and the Wonder Women”) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Cloak and Dagger,” “Beyond the Lights”). I’m not saying it was the only panel where the participants thanked the organizer and each other, or that only women do that, but it was the only one I attended where that happened. Saturday night, of course, is the annual costume competition, the SDCC Masquerade, this year featuring the Game of Thrones characters singing their version of “Hamilton.”

I talked to Seth Rogen, Eliza Coupe, and Josh Hutcherson about their new series, “Future Man,” coming to Hulu November 14. And I attended one of the most popular panels at SDCC, the legendary “Starship Smackdown.” Good to see the bullet rocket get so much love. Thanks to all and can’t wait for next year!

Comic-Con 2017: Day One

Posted on July 21, 2017 at 3:26 pm

Yesterday’s first panel was one that has become an annual highlight: the composers of scores for movie superheroes.  Ray Costa moderated a conversation with Mark Isham (the upcoming “Cloak & Dagger”),  Brian Tyler (“The Mummy,” “Power Rangers”), David Russo (“Gotham”), and Ludwig Göransson (the eagerly anticipated “Black Panther”).  I interviewed Stephen Lane from The Prop Store about his upcoming auction of movie treasures including Jack Nicholson’s purple Joker suit from “Batman” (did you know he picked that color because he loves the Lakers?)  I also interviewed Jake Monaco, composer for the Scooby-Doo reboot and “Dinotrux,” and social media star Splack (more on them coming soon).  I went to a panel on storytelling with Disney artists and another of my annual favorites, the MAD Magazine panel with the usual gang of idiots and the fans who love them.  And I got to talk to Caldecott award-winning writer/illustrator Brian Selznick about his upcoming film, “Wonderstruck,” starring Julianne Moore and directed by Todd Haynes.  More coming soon!

SDCC 2017: Preview Night (and a Contest for Tick Swag)

Posted on July 20, 2017 at 1:57 pm

Welcome to Comic-Con 2017! The force is with us! As you can see from the photo, I got a glimpse of the newest “Star Wars” movie. And I visited one of the coolest displays at SDCC this year, Amazon Prime’s Tick Experience. The new series, produced by and starring Peter Serafinowicz (“Spy”), looks very good, more complex than I was expecting from a show about a big blue superhero with antennae who spouts dialog somewhere between a robot and a fortune cookie. The character of Arthur (Griffin Newman of “Search Party”) is especially well conceived and performed. The Tick Experience includes a preview of the first episode, which comes to Amazon Prime on August 25, followed by an enthralling escape room adventure and a crazy green screen photo op. I got some extremely cool swag which I will send to some lucky reader. To enter, send me an email at moviemom@moviemom.com, with Tick in the subject line. Don’t forget your address! (US addresses only) I’ll pick a winner July 25, 2017. Good luck!

At the exhibition hall, I saw the set from “Star Wars” above, with clips from the new film and the 40th anniversary Star Wars celebration and a tribute to Princess Leia Carrie Fisher. Fisher was represented at another booth, too, with treasures from her collection and her mother’s for the upcoming auction of the Carrie Fisher/Debbie Reynolds estates. Reynolds, of course, was the all-time greatest collector of Hollywood props, costumes, and memorabilia, so there are some extraordinary items including Dorothy’s ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” and Carrie Fisher’s chair from the set of “Return of the Jedi.”

More coming soon!

Comic-Con 2016: Big Bang Theory and Sharknado 4

On Day 2 of San Diego Comic-Con, I:

Attended a panel of writers and producers for one of my favorite television shows, “The Big Bang Theory,” moderated by Melissa Rauch, who plays Bernadette. The writers are genuine fanboys — and one fangirl — and spoke about how some of their own experiences and obsessions become a part of the show. And they revealed a new guest star, who came out on stage to greet us: “30 Rock’s” Jack McBrayer, who will play Penny’s brother. Katey Sagal will be returning as her mother.

Spoke to the very handsome and charming Jason Matthew Smith, who performed in three “Star Trek” movies but ended up on screen in just one,

Spoke to the lovely and warm-hearted Caroline Williams, who starred in “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2” and got a part in “Sharknado 4” (airing July 31, 2016) via Facebook. Yes, she is Stretch again and has a chainsaw.

Attended a panel on diversity in animation with some of the greatest animators of all time, people who worked on everything from Disney classics to Hanna-Barbera, Bob Clampett, Charlie Brown specials and “The Simpsons,”

Heard a presentation about a new streaming service called Shudder, specializing in horror, with categories like demonic possession, child murderers, and zombies. In a very typical Comic-Con experience, it was held in one of the smaller rooms, without a line and some seats left over, and on the panel was the star of three of the biggest films of all time, Elijah Wood.
