On the first full day of San Diego Comic-Con, I:

Ran into a “Sharknado 4” parade with Elvises on stilts,

Talked to CBS television series stars, including James Wolk of “Zoo,” Tyler James Williams of “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders,” Eddie Kaye Thomas and Jaydn Wong from “Scorpion,” Wilmer Valderrama of “NCIS,” and Megan Ketch of “American Gothic,”

Saw directors Oliver Stone and Luc Besson in their first-ever Comic-Con appearances, to talk about their upcoming films “Snowden” and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,”

Heard a fascinating discussion about Mormon comic artists,

Visited an interactive experience inspired by the new television series, “Timeless,” that involved being swirled around in a Gravitron and exiting into a hallway showing that past historical events had been altered and being so dizzy it seemed like they might be true, and

Attended one of my favorite annual events, the Mad about MAD — MAD Magazine panel. There were jokes about the current political candidates, of course. When asked if they weren’t secretly hoping Trump would win because he provides such good material, they said that they were sure whoever got elected would give them plenty to make fun of. MAD has a free ebook on Donald Trump and some of its most popular artwork is now available on Zazzle. They have a forthcoming parody book called Goodnight Batcave. I was delighted to hear that “MADtv” is returning to television, Tuesday nights on the CW. In response to questions, John Ficarra said that yes, they’ve been sued (by Irving Berlin), and that the stories that produce the most hate mail are when they make fun of boy bands. And I love to hear the stories of the legendary trips the entire staff used to take together. On one cruise to Bermuda, they played a joke on MAD founder Wiliam Gaines by re-enacting the famous stateroom scene from “A Night at the Opera.” By the time the room was filled with MAD writers and artists, crew members, and random strangers, he was roaring with laughter. And so, as they told the story, was the audience, still MAD about MAD.

It’s time for San Diego Comic-Con! Thousands of fans, many in costume, with gather to pay tribute to and get updates on the greatest of lively arts, from movies to games, television, and of course comic books.

Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick will be there to promote their new animated musical “Trolls” and master of political paranoia Oliver Stone will be there with the cast of “Snowden.” “Fifth Element’s” Luc Besson will be there to talk about his trippy new space story ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” starring Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan. I’m looking forward to an update on “Guardians of the Galaxy 2,” “Wonder Woman,” and next month’s “Suicide Squad.”  Sigourney Weaver will be there for the 30th anniversary of “Aliens.”

There will be full-length previews of new television series including “Riverdale” with Archie and his friends and Conan O’Brien’s “People of Earth.”

There are as always great panels, including two hosted by my friend Leslie Combemale, one on women in animation and one on diversity in animation.  As always, one of the highlights will be MAD artist SergioAragonés showing us his lightning-fast drawing skills and wicked sense of humor in the “Quick Draw.”

Stay tuned for updates!

Boxtrolls: Interviews at Comic-Con

In honor of the release of “The Boxtrolls” this week, I’m sharing some of the photos I took in July at Comic-Con, where I interviewed the cast and filmmakers and attended an “Eat Like a Boxtroll” lunch made up of insects. Star Isaac Hempstead Wright (of “Game of Thrones”) was clearly not excited about eating bugs, no matter how delectably prepared, but he was a very good sport.

I admit, I tried some grubs, but drew the line at anything crunchy or with legs.

Later, I sat with Sir Ben Kingsley, who plays the villain, to talk about performing all by himself, in a studio near his home in England. He described his character as “a social climber. He spends a lot of his energy trying to get into that club that doesn’t really want him to join. It’s a small, exclusive clique of guys who run the community. They’re quite reluctant to let him in. So he invents an enemy — politicians often do this — and says, ‘I’ll rid you of that enemy.'” He wants to power himself by destroying these very sweet, harmless creatures.” He was especially happy to work with LAIKA studios, producers of “Coraline” and “Paranorman,” because they are “quite fearless in family movies, putting light and shade together, bitter and sweet.”He modeled the voice and accent of his character on a man he knows who is anything but villainous, and said that to play a bad guy “I find the flaw, the one part in me that can’t be healed. I look for the crack and feel empathy for it. And love it….Storytelling is profoundly healing. And he told me the secret of his performance: he did all of the recording lying down. “Not a tense bone in my body, completely relaxed. If there’s tension in your neck and shoulders, it will show.”

Isaac Hempsted Wright and Elle Fanning play the film’s two main characters, Eggs, a boy raised by boxtrolls, and Winnie, the daughter of the town’s most important citizen, a wealthy and powerful man who is far more interested in tasting exotic cheeses than in noticing his daughter.boxtrollscastFanning, whose sister played the title role in LAIKA’s first film, “Coraline,” said that the script arrived with a box of drawings to give her a sense of what the setting and characters would look like, but she learned more every time she would record. She described Winnie as “spoiled, looking for someone to listen to her, but brave, and having to learn to grow up fast.” Hempsted Wright said Eggs is “plucky, feral, raised away from people and society, surrounded by class struggles and ‘cheese struggles.’ He has the best of both, the kindness of the boxtrolls and the bravery of humans.”

Behind the Scenes

Comic-Con 2014

Posted on July 21, 2014 at 8:00 am

Copyright 2014 Nell MinowIt’s here!  San Diego Comic-Con begins Wednesday night in San Diego and I’ll be there.  This is my favorite event of the year, a chance to find out what everyone will be watching, listening to, playing, and otherwise enjoying over the next few years.  As I always say, this is the Iowa caucuses of popular culture.

Scheduled to appear are a dazzling array of stars on and off screen including everyone from Betty White and Quentin Tarantino to Benedict Cumberbatch and John Malkovich (voices from “Penguins of Madagascar”) and Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, plus writer/director Jorge Gutierrez and producer Guillermo del Toro from “Book of Life.”  Voice talent from “The Boxtrolls” film I’ve been writing about will be there, too, including Sir Ben Kingsley and Elle Fanning.  The cast, producers, and/or writers for shows like “The Big Bang Theory,” “Venture Brothers,” “The Blacklist,” “Bates Motel,” and many more will be there, along with some glimpses of new series premiering this fall.  And of course there will be crazy costumes and, as always, lots of surprises.  Stay tuned!
