The Next Star Wars Films: Locations

Posted on August 29, 2013 at 8:00 am

Director J.J. Abrams is getting ready to begin filming of the next cycle of “Star Wars” movies.  And every studio and location in the world — literally — wants to host them.  Variety quotes Albuquerque Studios president Gary Arnold:

“Every location and facility across the globe and every state in the U.S. must be offering the moon and stars,” Arnold says. “And they’re all willing to offer things on a one-shot basis, everything they can imagine the producers might want, just to be able to say they got the new ‘Star Wars’ shoot. That din is probably the first challenge facing any location or facility that wants to be seriously considered.”

Says Arnold: “The irony of ‘Star Wars’ is there won’t be a single location that is identifiable. We had one of the biggest-grossing films in history, ‘The Avengers’ shoot here, but ‘Breaking Bad’ has more impact on tourism than anything we’ve ever done in New Mexico. Identifiable locales are what drives tourism.”

According to Variety, they will be shooting at the legendary Pinewood Studios in London.  The original “Star Wars” script for what is now chapter IV was set in a jungle environment, but that was switched to desert for budgetary reasons.  I wonder what factors will enter into the decision about the settings for this one, especially now that so much can be done digitally.

J.J. Abrams to Direct the new Star Wars

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 10:10 am

I am delighted with the news that J.J. Abrams will direct the new Disney-produced “Star Wars” movie.  The man behind the “Lost,” “Fringe,” “Felicity,” and “Alias” television series has shown himself to be adept at being true to established franchises while revitalizing them with his films “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and “Star Trek.”  A perfect choice!  Can’t wait to see where he takes the series.

“Star Wars” Rumor #1 Is a Great One!

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 11:07 pm

The first rumor following the Disney purchase of Lucasfilms is that the screenplay for the new “Star Wars” movie scheduled for 2015 could be written by Michael Arndt, who wrote “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Toy Story 3.”  He would be a superb choice.  He came into the “Toy Story” franchise after two spectacularly successful and completely self-contained episodes and came up with a screenplay that was completely true to the spirit of the earlier episodes while adding even greater depth to the story and characters.  This is a very good sign!  Stay tuned for more updates.

UPDATE 11/10  — it’s been confirmed.  This is very good news! Next, wait for an announcement of the director.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm and Announces a New Star Wars Trilogy

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 11:42 pm

The Force is going to be a whole new generation.  Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion and has announced that it will produce a new Star Wars trilogy, with the first one coming out in 2015.  As all true fans know, George Lucas intended a nine-film series, so this may mean that his original outlines for chapters 7, 8, and 9 (or VII, VIII, and IX) are about to go into production.  There were a lot of jokes today about mixing in the Star Wars characters with the Muppets, Marvel, and Mickey Mouse.  But I am betting that Disney understands the value of the franchise well enough to make the next “Star Wars” more like the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” and less like “Tron: Legacy.”  Or Jar-Jar Binks.

For Dad: Darth Vader and Son

Posted on June 7, 2012 at 8:00 am

If Dad’s a big Star Wars fan, he’ll appreciate the very cute Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown.

What if Darth Vader took an active role in raising his son? What if “Luke, I am your father” was just a stern admonishment from an annoyed dad? In this hilarious and sweet comic reimagining, Darth Vader is a dad like any other—except with all the baggage of being the Dark Lord of the Sith. Celebrated artist Jeffrey Brown’s delightful illustrations give classic Star Wars® moments a fresh twist, presenting the trials and joys of parenting through the lens of a galaxy far, far away. Life lessons include lightsaber batting practice, using the Force to raid the cookie jar, Take Your Child to Work Day on the Death Star (“Er, he looks just like you, Lord Vader!”), and the special bond shared between any father and son.
