List is too broad. Do you add a good movie, just because it had a book, or do you add a movie because the book was good?
Difficult topic. Steven Spielberg was offered the chance to direct “Harry Potter”, but turned it down because the book was so good, it left him with little to add, and he would be criticized for any changes he made.
I was thinking of this when I saw the trailer for “The Great Gatsby” this weekend. On the one hand, I know Baz Luhrmann did great things with “Romeo and Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge”. On the other hand, I looked at the trailer and thought that parts of it don’t line up with my view of the book – Gatsby’s TOO confident, the green dock light is insanely bright, and a key plot event seems too explicitly shown. I’m just going to have to pay my $12 and find out.
Agreed — my list would look different, and I share your concerns about Gatsby! But I liked this list because it gave me a chance to reconsider some of my thoughts.
