The Original: The Taking of Pelham 123

The 1974 version of “The Taking of Pelham 123” is one of my favorite thrillers, with a brilliant cast that includes Robert Shaw, Walter Matthau, and Jerry Stiller and a terrific score by David Shire. I’m hoping that this week’s release of the remake with John Travolta and Denzel Washington will be as good. Here’s a reminder of the original.

  1. I haven’t seen the original, but there was a made-for-TV remake not that long ago that was pretty good. It had Edward James Olmos as the detective and Vince D’Inofrio as Mr. Blue.

  2. Wow, Toby, I didn’t know that! I’d love to see it. I’m a huge fan of both actors. The original had a great feel for the city; I hope this one does, too.

  3. I never saw the original but today I saw Denzel give a masterful performance and Travolta, too. Usually I hate shootem ups and car crashes and explosions but nothing is playing lately for adults so I took a chance and went for this one. Not sorry either. It was a good pic. I enjoyed it.
