Tribute: Marvin Hamlisch

Oscar-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch has died at age 68.  A tireless advocate for teaching music in schools, Hamlisch won three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards. On Broadway, he wrote the music for A Chorus Line, which received the Pulitzer Prize, as well as They’re Playing Our Song, The Goodbye Girl and Sweet Smell of Success.  He composed the scores for more than forty movies, including “The Way We Were” and adapted music for others, including “The Sting.”  He worked extensively with Barbra Streisand and conducted “pops” concerts across the country.  I was lucky enough to hear him a few years ago at the National Press Club and will never forget his inspiring words about the transformational power of art.  May his memory be a blessing.
