What Movie Could You Watch a Million Times?

We all have one. I have several. Very often, it’s not a classic. Sometimes it is a guilty pleasure. But each of us has a movie we could take to a desert island and be happy to watch over and over. NPR’s “All Things Considered” asks people who make movies to talk about their selections and it is a joy to hear them talk about the movies they love and why they love them. Movies I’ve Seen a Million Times has Whoopi Goldberg on “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Donald Faison on “The Empire Strikes Back,” Jared Harris (of “Sherlock Holmes” and “Mad Men”) on “Tootsie.” Well worth a listen! And I’d love to hear which movies you would pick.
The Quiet Man
Dr. Strangelove
Citizen Kane
Armageddon (my guilty pleasure movie)
Over the years, I’ve found that while there are movies I’d like to watch repeatedly, I have to restrain myself or I’ll never watch anything new. (I’ve put “Rocky” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” on multiyear hiatus).
It also doesn’t help when AMC and other channels run marathons of the same pictures every three weeks. (The first two “Godfathers” take 8 hours when you throw in commercials!)
I’ve watched The Great Escape and The Sting more times than I can count.
Ha! The previous responses are so highbrow I’m almost too embarrassed to admit… I’ve seen Wayne’s World at least 1000 times (it was background noise, on repeat, to my insomniac all-night needlework sessions for years, so now I can recite every word without even thinking about it – including Wayne’s “Chinese” conversation). The one that I could watch over and over without ever getting tired of it would have to be Muriel’s Wedding. I think that if I had to be stranded on a desert island I’d choose Muriel over Wayne. 🙂
Probably any one of my Top 5: Star Trek: First Contact, Airplane!, The Terminator, Die Hard and Princess Mononoke.
