Comic-Con: Miscellaneous Highlights

Some other highlights from Comic-Con:

The panel for the Syfy show “Alphas” was a lot of fun and really made me look forward to the second season premiere next Monday.  The cast promises some new romance and a new character whose ability makes it possible for her to learn anything very quickly.  However, actress Erin Way told us, her mind is like TIVO — something new comes in and something that was there gets erased.  And I enjoyed the booth for the upcoming comedy series “The Neighbors.”  We were ushered inside a suburban garage by brightly smiling people holding out apple pies.  It turned out we were all new arrivals from another planet assembled for our first lesson on how to fit in on planet Earth.  The show looks like a cross between the Coneheads, “Galaxy Quest,” and “Third Rock From the Sun,” but it has a good cast and could be fun.  

The Girls Gone Genre panel is one of my favorites, with panelists: Marti Noxon (Buffy, Angel), Jane Espenson (Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood), Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body), Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Angela Robinson (True Blood) and Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead, The Terminator).  As Noxon showed us one element of her work-life balance by cuddling her daughter while her son sat behind the panel, the women talked about “the metaphysical lens of genre” that provides a context “to say something about the real world through heightened reality.”  It’s “a safe space to be transgressive.”  Hurd talked about working for Roger Corman, who “made genre films long before they were A tentpoles. Ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances make the characters relatable.”  Noxon said the worst of gender stereotyping for both genders is to reduce us to just one thing.” And she said she “did not become a writer until I was willing to tell on myself in a way that was humiliating.  The devil is in the details.  You don’t get there until you learn to write in your own voice. The breakthrough was when I stopped trying to sell and just wrote the truth.”  Actress Woll said she is committed to not being too skinny so she can be a role model.  Her character in “True Blood” is “stronger the more she opens up to the world.  She can be sexy and naïve, sweet and violent, not cynical, compassionate.”  And the whole panel laughed about the usual studio “notes” about any female character when they ask to tone her down: “Wouldn’t she be more likable if…..???”

And I always love attending the panels with the designers.  This year I heard the illustrators who do the concept sketches to bring imaginary and historical scenes to life and the costume designers who make sure that every detail of the wardrobe helps to reveal something about the characters and their story.  It was a treat to see the initial ideas that became iconic images and to hear some tantalizing hints about upcoming productions (and some that have stalled).  While one of the people working on next year’s “Ender’s Game” was there, we were not allowed any glimpses of what we’ll be seeing.

And this was my first time at the annual “Starship Smackdown,” where sci-fi geeks (some with serious science chops) debate the merits of the entire fictional universe of spacecraft for a bracketed contest.  It’s like an episode of “Big Bang Theory” in real life, smart, fast, and wildly funny.  By the way, I went to the “Big Bang Theory” panel, too, though Johnny Galecki’s plane was delayed and Jim Parsons attended via computer screen because he is in NY performing on Broadway, and an interview of the people behind the show that was even more fun.  The highlight of the Smackdown was the surprise appearance of real-life superstar (and guest on “Big Bang Theory”) Neil DeGrasse Tyson who helped the group make the right decision on the last bracket: original Starship Enterprise and the refitted version.  Three cheers for James T. Kirk!  His ship was the winner.

The Dark Knight Rises

There’s a reason you never hear about “your friendly neighborhood Batman.”  Spidey may have some angst and guilt and abandonment issues but he is downright sunny-natured compared to the brooding soul of Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), holed up in Wayne Manor with only his loyal manservant Alfred (Michael Caine) and his tortured memories.  At the end of the second chapter of director and co-writer Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Wayne decided it would be better for the citizens of Gotham to believe that Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) died a hero than to tell them to truth about the descent of a once-honorable man into madness and vigilantism.  So everyone thinks that Batman is the villain who killed Dent instead of the hero who saved the city and Wayne is refusing to see anyone.

In Dent’s memory, legislation has been passed to keep dangerous criminals imprisoned and the crime rate is down so low that a policeman jokes they may be reduced to chasing people down for overdue library books.  But everyone in this story is tortured by secrets and shame, even Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldham), who carries in his breast pocket a speech setting the record straight but does not have the nerve to deliver it.  There is the lissome but light-fingered catering assistant who turns out to be the notorious Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway, rocking the leather catsuit).   And there is Bane (Tom Hardy), a terrorist who shows his contempt for humanity by cynically couching his atrocities in the idealistic vocabulary of social justice, trashing spirits as he trashes the concrete and social structures of the community.

It is overlong at two hours and 40 minutes but the action scenes are superbly staged, from the audacious plane-to-plane maneuver at the very beginning to the literally earthshaking attack on the city.  The “pod” motorcycle chases are sensational, especially with Hathaway at the helm.  She is never referred to as Catwoman, by the way, but when her goggles are up on her head, they amusingly evoke cat’s ears.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a standout as a perceptive young detective who understands Wayne too well.  Hardy does his best to overcome the daunting limitations of the masked role, acting with his eyes and body language, but the weirdly disembodied voice is unconnected to the action and at times seems like a bad dub job in a cheesy karate film.  Bale’s performance in this role (or, I should say, these roles) has always seemed thin to me, but fellow Oscar-winners Marion Cotillard, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine add some heft, especially Caine’s devoted Alfred, and it is good to see Tom Conti and Juno Temple in small but important roles.

The “Dark Knight Rises” title applies equally to both hero and villain in this story.  This is like a chess game where all the pieces are black.  Everyone has masks.  Everyone has scars and a soul corrupted by a bitter stew of anger, fear, betrayal, abandonment, and isolation.  Wayne says more than once he wears a mask to protect those he cares about, but he wears it to keep himself from getting too close to them, too.  Nolan continues his exploration of duality and untrustworthy narrators (though one logical inconsistency inadvertently telegraphs a plot twist).  Even the WMD at the heart of the action was originally designed for a benign, even heroic, purpose.  This is a thoughtful, ambitious story that explores the metaphor and heightened reality of the superhero genre to illuminate the fears and secrets — and potential for heroism and yearning for a clean slate — we all share.

Parents should know that this film has extended comic book-style action, peril, and violence, many characters injured and killed, torture, hostages, references to sad loss of parents, brief mild language, non-explicit sexual situation

Family discussion: Almost everyone in this movie has secrets and conflicts — how many can you identify?  Was Bruce Wayne right in thinking the risks of the energy technology were greater than the benefits? How are Bane and Batman alike?

Comic-Con: Costumes!

My most popular Comic-Con post each year is the one with the pictures of the attendees in costume.  I took more than 400 photos, and these are some of my favorites. Those are Playboy Bunny Avengers!  You can see Thor’s hammer and Captain America’s shield. Superman is waiting in line to order a hot dog.  Not sure who that alien-looking guy or blue lady are, but I recognize the Batman villains, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Nurse Joker (with a Spidey back-pack — a bit of a DC/Marvel mash-up) and of course Superman and Clark Kent. The Steampunkers always have great imagination and attention to detail. And I love the tiny Batman with Daddy Robin.

More From Comic-Con: “Firefly” 10th Reunion

Okay, even by Comic-Con standards, this is spectacular. The cast of Firefly was there to tape a 10th anniversary reunion special that will be broadcast on the Science Channel on November 11 and I got to attend the press conference with Joss Whedon and the cast.  If you don’t know why that is just about the coolest thing that ever happened, check out the legendary television series from the guy behind “Buffy” and “The Avengers” and you will know what I’m talking about.

Nathan Fillion, who has tucked references to “Firefly” in his new television series, “Castle,” says it was “Firefly that “taught me how to act.  Joss would say, ‘That’s a great idea! Or…’  But he made it more simple, more human.  He told me, ‘It’s a skill not to make people around you feel stupid.'”  As in all Whedon productions, the show had exceptionally strong and interesting women characters.  “Men who are comfortable with powerful women are more powerful men,” Whedon told us.  When asked about the devotion of the fans, especially members of the military, Whedon said it was because the show was about characters who understand “war, suffering greatly, bonding in the trenches, isolation, camaraderie.  It is  very unironic look at things that make soldiers passionate.  Mal is Machiavellian but would sacrifice himself for the others.  We were trying to communicate the human condition of unity during aloneness.”

One of the most popular attractions at Comic-Con was the collection of Batmobiles parked across the street from the convention center. A new book Batmobile: The Complete History and documentary pay tribute to the cool cars driven by Batman over the years, going back to the Adam West and Burt Ward version up through the Tumbler in this year’s “The Dark Knight Rises.”
