Happy 80th Birthday, Carol Burnett!

Posted on April 26, 2013 at 8:00 am

A very happy birthday today to the magnificent Carol Burnett!

Here’s a glimpse of her star-making performance as Princess Winifred in the delightful princess-and-the-pea musical “Once Upon a Mattress.”

This is the song that brought her to national attention on the Garry Moore Show:

Watch her timing as the world’s worst secretary, Mrs. Wiggins:

And here is one of the most famous costumes, punchlines and moments in television comedy history:

Carol Burnett did fine dramatic work in “Friendly Fire” and “The Four Seasons.”  What made her popular “Mama’s Family” sketches on her variety show so memorable was that she was not afraid to make her character tragic.  Happy birthday to a woman of incomparable wit, talent, and class.

MVP of the Month: Alexander Skarsgard

Posted on April 24, 2013 at 8:00 am

“True Blood’s” Alexander Skarsgård is in three movies opening up within a few weeks of each other, demonstrating impressive range.  In “Disconnect” he plays a young husband whose grief over the death of his baby has made him feel isolated and helpless.  In “Earth” he plays the charismatic leader of an off-the-grid group of rebels against corporations that harm people or the environment and the executives who run them.  And in “What Maisie Knew,” a contemporary update of a book by Henry James, he plays a bartender who unexpectedly finds himself the stepfather of the title character.alexander-skarsgard-1_180178-1280x1024

Skarsgård is the son of Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård (“Good Will Hunting”).  His first US role was in “Zoolander.”  He later appeared in “Generation Kill” and in Lady Gaga’s music video for “Paparazzi.”  His next film is “Hidden,” with Alexandra Riseborough, who also appeared in “Disconnect.”

Happy Birthday Shirley Temple!

Posted on April 23, 2013 at 10:24 am

Shirley Temple, at age six the biggest movie star in the world, turns 85 today.  Here are three of my favorite moments from her movies.

In “Poor Little Rich Girl,” she danced with Alice Faye and Jack Haley (“Wizard of Oz’s” tin man).

In “The Little Colonel,” she learned the stair step from the greatest of the era, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.  This scene is featured in my new book.

And here she dances with future “Beverly Hillbillies” star Buddy Ebsen in “Captain January.”  (Trivia note — he was originally cast as the Tin Man in “Wizard of Oz” but a reaction to the aluminum paint used on his skin sent him to the hospital.)

Charting the Age Differences of Movie Star Romances

Posted on April 20, 2013 at 11:02 pm

geresloveinterestEvery year I enjoy voting for the award the Alliance of Women Film Journalists’ “Most Egregious Age Difference Between The Leading Man and The Love Interest Award.” There are always a lot of contenders. Now New York Magazine charts the age disparities over the careers of stars like Denzel Washington, Harrison Ford, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt. If there was an award for the most likely to co-star with an actress in his age group, the winner would be…Tom Hanks
