Sonic Highways: Making Music With Dave Grohl

Posted on September 3, 2014 at 3:46 pm

I’m really looking forward to “Sonic Highways,” a new HBO series premiering in October.  Dave Grohl crosses the country with the Foo Fighters to make music, recording a different track in each studio, and talks to a wide range of musicians and studio technicians along the way, including Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Joan Jett, and Bonnie Raitt.

Two hit tunes from the hottest pop divas are both called “Bang Bang.”  One is Beyoncé’s sultry, glamorous cover of the Cher oldie in this teaser for her HBO special.

Ariana Grande, Jesse J, and Nicki Minaj have an unrelated song called “Bang Bang” that brought down the house at the MTV Video Awards.  These girls bring it.

And let’s listen to the original.

And the Nancy Sinatra version from “Kill Bill.”

Cozi Zuehlsdorff’s New Song for “Dolphin Tale 2” — “Brave Souls”

Posted on August 26, 2014 at 12:23 pm

I’m really looking forward to “Dolphin Tale 2,” even more so after seeing this music video by Cozi Zuehlsdorff, the young actress who reprises her role as Hazel from the original film. Cozi’s song, which she wrote and performs herself, is called “Brave Souls” and in this video she explains how the “Dolphin Tale” movies and their stars, the dolphins Winter and Hope, inspired the lyrics.

Taylor Swift Shakes it Off

Posted on August 22, 2014 at 3:54 pm

Taylor Swift, who can be seen in “The Giver,” debuts her first pop album with this adorable video.

There have been some online discussions about whether Swift is racially insensitive or even racist.  That is a subjective assessment viewers will have to make for themselves.

Director Mark Romanek says

We simply choose styles of dance that we thought would be popular and amusing and cast the best dancers that were presented to us without much regard to race or ethnicity. If you look at it carefully, it’s a massively inclusive piece. It’s very, very innocently and positively intentioned. And — let’s remember — it’s a satirical piece. It’s playing with a whole range of music-video tropes and clichés and stereotypes.
