Contest: Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre

Posted on September 9, 2008 at 11:01 am

sleeping beautyjpgFrom 1982-1987 actress Shelly Duvall produced and hosted a series of fairy tales on Showtime, starring some of Hollywood’s top performers. Christopher Reeve and Matthew Broderick played very charming princes, and princesses included Bernadette Peters as Sleeping Beauty, Susan Sarandon as Beauty, and “Flashdance’s” Jennifer Beals as Cinderella. The costumes and sets were low-budget but very creative, inspired in part by the classic fairy tale illustrations of Maxfield Parrish and Howard Pyle. Beautyandthebeast.jpg
The series has just been re-released on DVD and I have FOUR copies to give away! This is such a special prize I want to make sure everyone has a chance to participate. So post a comment, telling me which is your family’s favorite fairy tale and why. The most imaginative and creative responses submitted by the end of the day Sept 30 will win the box set of the complete Faerie Tale Theatre series. U.S. addresses only, please. I look forward to hearing from you!

27 Replies to “Contest: Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre”

  1. This is actually a DVD re-release, not the first time on DVD. I bought the complete series of “Faerie Tale Theatre” about two years ago at a Target in Virginia. It was a really nice set.
    I loved this show.

  2. My favorite faerie tale in this series was Rupelstiskin. I loved Shelly Duvall’s character and the message of what something is really worth. Its a good message and would love to share it w/my kids! I saw this show many years ago and I’ve never looked at radishes the same way. ;->

  3. So often Hollywood is so wrapped up in numbers, that it forgets about values, and the influence it has on our future generations. It is always wonderful to see actors playing a different kind of hero, by being on PBS (Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow), or by doing other childrens’ programming. It shouldn’t always be about, “Who’s getting blown up?” or, “Who’s killing the largest number of invading aliens?” Sometimes it just has to be as simple and wonderful as, “Who gets to marry the princess?”

  4. My sons watched Shelley Duvall’s Fairie Tale Show a lot! It was very unique and interesting. The number of stars that appeared on her show is unbelievable. Thanks, Cindi

  5. We still have our VHS copies and I have caught my kids watching them once in a while, as recently as this summer. Truly good material never dies, it simply gets re-released in new formats and with new packaging (and higher prices!).

  6. definately beauty and the beast, it shows the goodness inside everyone and if someone sees this goodness they help to bring it out as belle does with beast and that looks do not mean a thing someone georgeous on the outside can be bone ugly on the inside which comes out and thier exterior becomes bone ugly also. but someone gorgeous on the inside alays shines thru no matter

  7. I grew up watching Faerie Tale Theatre and I absolutley love all of them 🙂 I recently remembered them from my childhood and wanted to share them with my 3 and 5 year old neices, so I rented Goldilocks and the 3 bears. Of course, they also fell in love with it and everytime I see them they ask me if I brought another one for them to watch. Sadly, I could only find that one at my video store and I would love to be able to share all of the wonderful stories with my adorable neices, that would be such a great and memorable gift!

  8. I love Beauty and the Beast. It shows how it’s possible to love even the most unlovely of beings. It also let me know that though I could find no beauty in my physical self that I could be beautiful and worthy of love within. It made me decide not to settle for anyone who comes along or degrade myself for some affection. I learned to love myself and love others because of beauty and the beast.

  9. When I think of Faerie Tale Theatre I am transported back in time to my oldest daughter’s childhood. She was completely enchanted by this series (and I was right there with her). Now I have a granddaughter who will celebrating her fourth birthday in two weeks. What a wonderful gift it would be to share this with her.

  10. I loved watching Faerie Tale Theater as an adult and would love to share them with my five grandchildren. The shows are family oriented and very entertaining. We need more of these type shows on TV today.

  11. I remember watching Sleeping Beauty with Christopher Reeve and thinking he really was the Prince, cuz he was so handsome.

  12. I also grew up watching the Faerie Tale Theater. My sister, brother, and I have a few obscure favorites over the years, but my absolute favorite is ‘The Princess Who Never Laughed’. Weinerhead Waldo made me laugh so much as a little kid! About 3 years ago we were all gitty about ‘Deal or No Deal’ simply because it’s Weinerhead Waldo (aka Howie Mandel) all grown up. I’m sure he wants to forget those old days! I also have to mention ‘The Frog Price’ because we still quote from it today. When the princess wants to come in and see the frog (Robin Williams) who is changing his clothes, he yells “But I’m Naked!” in a very girly way. We still use that one every once in a while. I’m glad these videos have stood the test of time and I will be able to show them to my kids one day.

  13. There hasn’t been a fairy tale yet about 5 young princes, but in our home we live it. Raising 5 boys in a world gone far and away from the days of chivalry and dreams come true isn’t always easy but we are trying. Cinderella is our most favorite fairy tale due very much to the sweet fact that I married my prince charming and I hope to one day bless 5 princesses with 5 prince charmings of their own.

  14. I watched this series with my daughter when she was very young, though I doubt she’d remember it. Now that she has two children of her own I’d love to win this to give to her.

  15. I watched all of these movies with my grandchildren and own many of the videos. Our all time favorite was the not so well known The Boy Who Left Home To Find Out About THE SHIVERS. It appealed to the boys as well as the girls and always gave them the shivers. I now have great grandchildren and would be so thrilled to share these wonderful stories with them.

  16. I was listening to Jeff and Jer and heard the Movie Mom telling about this contest. I was so excited to hear that the Faerie Tale Theatre box set is being released on DVD.
My daughter Amanda is now 24 years old. When she was in preschool and beyond, we used to rent the VHS copies of every Faerie Tale Theatre episode from the library. We saw everyone and loved them all! They are enchanting and whimsical for the little ones and smart enough for adults to enjoy.
I really can’t pick my ultimate favorite, but I’ve always been partial to the romantic stories such as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.
Now that my daughter is married and planning a family, we can share these stories with our future children/grandchildren.

  17. Since I grew up watching them I love all of them however my favorite is “The Boy who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers.” What I like about “The Boy who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers,” is the creativity and play on words. Martin goes to spend 3 nights in this “haunted” castle. He hopes that will give him the shivers. Instead he finds out that he was really entertained with dead guys who bowl with bones etc. (Spoiler alert) Of course then at the end a window is opened and a cool breeze comes in and he gets “the shivers.” But what I love most of all is that the princess he just married gets “the blues” one day. So he decides to leave to find out about the blues. I always wanted to see a sequel.

  18. My favorite as a child was the Snow Queen, closely followed by Rapunzel and Snow White. These were my favorite movies as a child. I hope to share them with my three girls now. As a family, consensus would have us favoring Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.

  19. My daughter and I were discussing Faerie Tale Theater, Fraggle Rock and the Storyteller just last night. Her younger brother missed out on seeing these shows. My personal favorite is Thumbelina.

  20. My mom was addicted to these Faery Tales and Shelly Duvall has always been one of her favorite actresses. We didn’t have cable, so when these came out on video, my mom and I would rent a new Episode/Video Tape each weekend. I always looked forward to it – it was our special time together!
My favorite was The Princess & The Pea – I begged my mom to rent it over and over again. At the time, I didn’t know who Liza Minnelli was…lol!
I would LOVE to win these and present them to my Mother. She was recently diagnosed with Dementia and is no longer able to drive, so on days when me or one of my sisters cannot make it to her house, she can pop in a DVD and watch something enjoyable! Thank you for this giveaway and a reminder of joyful times spent with my mom! 🙂

  21. Hey, for anyone who is a “Faerie Tale Theatre” fan I just picked up the entire gift collection for only $54.99. I try to find deals early so I can get a head start on the x-mas shopping and this was so much cheaper than all the other stores. Just an FYI in case you’re interested.

  22. Oops, I forgot to mention where I got it. They had it at FamilyVideo.com. Anyway, enjoy. It really is a great series.

  23. Once upon a time there was a mom who wished more than anything else to pass her love of Faerie Tale Theater on to her children. She discovered that the wise and fair “Movie Mom” of Belief.net was giving away golden copies of said DVD. She was overjoyed! She had partaken of these stories faithfully with HER own mother as a child and remembered the good times they had laughing together over tales to which they could both relate. They were huge fans of the noble Sir Robin Williams and therefore “The Frog Prince” was their favorite episode. The mom of which we speak will “walk ten miles just to stand in your garbage” if you bestow on her the great honor of a copy of the “Faerie Tale Theater” DVD to share with her own progeny. And I assure you that the family will all live happily ever after! (And it goes without saying that the mom will continue to seek Movie Mom’s wise counsel before allowing her young princes to view any movies in the kingdom). The End.

  24. Bruno Bettelheim wrote a great book called “The Uses of Enchantment”.
It tells all of us how important it is to use and foster our imaginations. Shelly Duvall and I must be sisters under the skin.
When I was a kid, my favorite section of the library was the 398’s.
In the Dewey system, that’s where one finds fairy tales, legends folk tales. I think I read through the entire section in one summer! I knew every version of every tale, until I discovered Shelly’s Faire Tale Theatre. I was working as the Library Technician in charge of the Audio Visual Department and was lucky enough to review possible purchases for the Library. Shelly’s wonderful videos were a dream come true! They not only told the beloved tales well with some of our best actors in the parts but they also did something very important; they used humor and grace to help children look at the tales in another way–they helped all viewers use and foster that all-important section of our minds–our imaginations. Thanks, Shelly, and thanks Movie Mom for bringing attention to these wonderful productions again!
