DVDs for kids and their families — enter now!

Posted on February 7, 2008 at 11:06 am

I have family-friendly DVDs to give away to the first ten people who send me an email at moviemom@moviemom.com and identify themselves as Beliefnet readers. If you let me know the ages and genders of your children, I’ll try to keep that in mind as I decide who gets what, but I can’t promise, especially for the last few who qualify. No need to send your address yet; I will notify all who win and get the info then. But as long as you are writing me anyway, let me know a little bit about the movies your families enjoy and what I can do to make this site more useful and entertaining for you. Thanks for visiting and I hope you win!

  1. I am so glad to have found you. I have wanted this kind of information for years. We have an 11-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son. We don’t do any shows with guns, violence, or too scary. It is nice that you list why movies get the rating they do. We love Shrek, the Princess Diaries, Bee Movie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, etc. Thank you for doing what I would consider a fantasy job; I wish I would have thought of it first.
    Blessings.

  2. I have a daughter who is 9 and a whole girl scout troop of 9/10 year olds. I would love movies that pertain to girls growing up.
“Coming of Age” stories that are without many bad words or inappropriate explicit scenes. Thank you…we have lots of slumber parties and this would be super!

  3. I’m a mom of 3 ages 12, 6, and 5 and also a Girl Scout Leader of 12 year olds, and a Children’s Ministries Dir for my church. I would love any DVDs that depict characters with good values or having to deal with life struggles and relying on their morals to make their decisions. Thanks for the great resource!

  4. This site is pretty much the only site I use to “preview” movies my kids ask to see. It is hard enough to make good decisions for and with your kids about friends, activities, etc. and I do not have the time or desire to go to all the movies before they do just to “check them out”. With nine children ages 23 to 5, seven of whom are still at home, it is extremely helpful to me to be able to go on the belief net site and read the reviews and then discuss the movies intelligently with my kids “before” we decide if they can go see a movie and the “damage is done”. The couple of times I have not read a review by movie mom before a child/children went to see a movie, I and they were very sorry! The only good that came of it was a discussion on remembering that you CAN leave a movie in the middle of it and that you CAN NOT always trust a “well-meaning” friend who told you it was a good movie. Thank you for being straightforward, intelligent, and oh-so-helpful to this family!

  5. I read beliefnet, now that you are to be found there! I have been following you for years — have the book and everything! You provide SUCH an important service and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am the mom of 4 kids aged 9, 12, 14, and almost 16!

  6. I’m a reader, and I have a 14-year old son named Aaron. Sometimes it’s hard to know what movies are appropriate because he’s at such an ackward age. I don’t want him to think that I believe he’s still a “little boy” but he’s definately not grown either.

  7. I enjoy reading the reviews Beliefnet;Movie Mom. We are grandparents to 14 grandchildren and we love to take them to movies. The grand children range from 13 years to 2 years old. It helps to review the movies and DVD before we watch the movie so we don’t have to walk out or discuss things we are prepared for.

  8. You are the first place I go to see if movoes are appropriate for my children now 11 and 13. We read your reviews together and my sons make the right decisions based on your reviews. I always say “We have to see what MOvie Mom thinks about it”. Thank you for helping me raise my children and caring what they view. Even if it is a movie that is not entirely appropriate there are suggestions you provide on ways we can learn from it.

  9. I am a mom of 9 year old triplets (2 boys, 1 girl) and an 11 year old girl. I always check movie mom before we make a trip to the movies. Like an earlier reader, I have been dismayed by content in some pg movies. I also appreciate the opportunity to talk about issues that may be raised in certain movies before we attend (such as Narnia). I miss the movie index you used to have on your old site? Any chance you will add that again?

  10. Thanks for posting, Val! The DVDs are all gone this time but I will have another contest again soon, so keep checking. And yes, the entire archive of more than 1400 reviews and 400 blog posts will all be transferred over here. We have to do each one separately, so it takes a while, but Beliefnet is working hard to make it happen.

  11. I may be too late, but thought I’d try, any way, for one of the dvds you are giving away. My daughter is almost 4 and has many interests–princesses, other countries, people and pets wqho help each other out. Thanks for considering us.

  12. Thanks for trying, Kim — they’re all gone this time but I will be offering DVDs again soon, so keep checking!

  13. I realize I’m too late for the contest (will try again). But I’m a single mom of a 7 y.o. boy. I used to always check out Movie Mom’s reviews before we considered seeing anything. It used to be easy to reach your site from my yahoo page. Then, they took that link away. I’m not real ‘techie’ but I have found my way here–ha! We definitely enjoy humor (clean) and adventure. Also, we’re Christian and he already has shown an amazing attention span (on his own) for some Biblical-facts shows/documentarys on TBN. Appreciate the kid-friendly reviews!

  14. I enjoy your reviews of movies. As a mom of a 14 year old daughter, it is sometimes hard to pick a movie that is “appropriate” for her. I seem to always agree with your movie reviews were as other critics I don’t agree with. It is nice to have another “mom”‘s view. Thanks for being honest in reviewing these movies.

  15. i enjoy your reviews it helps me when i want to pick out a movie or show for my grandchildren . i have 7 grand kids ages 16.15.13.10.9.8.3,so you see I need all age group movies.
