Hi, Nell. My initial response (after watching the announcement broadcast on the Today Show) was the same as yours: Why the shut out of the Coen Brothers, Jeff Bridges and “True Grit”? Everything I’ve heard about this movie makes me want to see it.
And everything I’ve heard about “The Tourist” makes it sound like a turkey, even though I thought initially that it might be a kind of fun take-off on Hitchcock. Perhaps Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Julian Fellowes, and Christopher McQuarrie underestimated how hard it is to make a great comic thriller like “North by Northwest.” Having great talent behind a movie is not enough.
But, as for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, I’d sooner expect the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to ignore “True Grit” at nomination time than the Golden Globe voters.
Nell, I didn’t post a comment regarding Black Swan when it was listed under your Recent Releases because I hadn’t seen it yet. I thought Natalie Portman did a masterful job of portraying the deranged ballerina Nina Sayers. Overall, I enjoyed the movie, although it was a tad too bizarre, and it was often difficult to know what was really happening as opposed to what was a figment of Nina’s screwed up mind. For parents, the sex scenes, though brief, are steamy, to say the least.
To Alicia: The Tourist doesn’t just sound like a turkey; it IS a turkey. The Golden Globes must be getting desperate to consider either Jolie or Depp for an award based on their subdued, zombie-like performances in this flop of a flick.
Not to dismiss True Grit as I haven’t seen it, but it sounds like everyone assumed this movie was going to be a winner before they even saw the trailer. Talking with people, they are upset Jeff Bridges and True Grit were left out, but haven’t seen the movie yet to determine for themselves whether it is good and deserving movie.
I will see the movie, as the track record for all involved has been good, but it is frustrating to be told which movies will be nominated so far in advance (not to take at you Nell but there is no way to know if The Help and Emma Stone will be as good as we hope).
And yes, The nominations for The Tourist and Burlesque are ridiculous. I would have liked to have seen The Other Guys and How do you know take those spots, but at least its been narrowed down to a three horse race.
Let me know what you think when you see “True Grit,” LLC. I think a lot of the show biz types and critics who complained about the nominations had seen it already. I had, and I think it is a far better film than some that were nominated.
As for “The Help,” well, it is a prediction, but I’d call it an informed guess. Check with me this time next year and we’ll see who is right!
