Man of the Week: JT

This week we have something that does not happen very often — two huge movies in the same genre opening on the same day: “Get Smart” with Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway and “The Love Guru” with Mike Myers. One is based on a 1960’s television series created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. The other is a satire of the popular fascination with healers and less-than-credible spiritual leaders. Both star accomplished comic actors who began their careers on television. But the most important thing they have in common is former N’Sync-er Justin Timberlake, who appears on screen in “The Love Guru” and on the soundtrack (with Madonna) in “Get Smart.”
I was NOT a fan of JT in his early career. However, he is proving himslef to be a much better actor than I ever expected. Also, I am fascinated by how he even pokes fun at himself. His Pepsi ads are quite good. The characters he is playing are well done. I think there is great hope for this young man. I look forward to seeing him in both roles.
I used to be pretty critical of JT for no good reason except the notion that a young fellow shouldn’t be so lucky in love/career/fame/money/etc.
But he’s acquitted himself nicely on “SNL,” show solid range in his film selections and, like the previous poster said, can poke fun at himself with abandon. As Wayne and/or Garth would say, rock on JT!
Right as ever, Christian! I used to be pretty critical of him because he was in N’Sync. And I didn’t like the way he handled the Janet Jackson flap. I’m not a huge fan of his CDs. But I have to agree with Tina Fey who says he has “mad skills.” He was far and away the highlight of “Love Guru,” and I thought he was terrific in “Alpha Dog.”
