LAIKA Auction: Items from Coraline, ParaNorman, and Boxtrolls

LAIKA Studios is making some of the items from its brilliant stop-motion films “Coraline,” “ParaNorman,” and “Boxtrolls” available for sale for the first time through the Heritage auction house. They include:

● From Coraline
* Coraline production puppet in her iconic blue-starred sweater
* The Cat production puppet
* Other Mother production puppet in her elaborately realized black dress

● From ParaNorman
* Norman production puppet in his baseball shirt outfit
* Zombie Judge production puppet with fully articulated mouth and face
* Intricate large-scale production props such as Mitch’s Van and “Zombie Attack” vending machine
* Original hand-drawn Annie Award-winning character designs

● From The Boxtrolls
* Eggs and Boxtrolls production puppets complete with their “Box” outfits
* Snatcher production puppet in his exquisite hand and laser-etched velvet jacket
* Snatcher’s Mecha-Drill, at over five feet, the largest prop ever created for a stop-motion film

The objects will be on display in Dallas, Jan. 27-29, at Heritage Auctions (3500 Maple Avenue, Dallas, TX, 75219); Feb. 3-5 at Heritage Auctions Park Avenue (445 Park Avenue at 57th Street); and Feb. 9-12, Heritage Auctions Beverly Hills (9478 West Olympic Avenue). I have had the great pleasure of visiting LAIKA in their Portland studio and every single item is an exquisitely crafted work of art. I wish I could bid on everything!

Sensational Movie Props for Sale at Auction

In The Maltese Falcon, after all the betrayal and misery and death, a cop gazes at the title object and asks, “What is it?” The hard-boiled detective played by Humphrey Bogart gives an answer that is not only #14 on the American Film Institute’s list of all-time top movie quotes — it could very well be used to describe the movies themselves. He says, “it’s the stuff that dreams are made of.”

That is also the very apt title for the November 25 Bonham’s/Turner Classic Movies auction of a mind-boggling array of movie treasures, including, incredibly, the Maltese Falcon itself. Items include Scarlett O’Hara’s neglige, Shirley Temple’s majorette jacket from one of my all-time favorite musical numbers in “Poor Little Rich Girl,” a Bette Davis gown from The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, John Huston’s annotated script for Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and a car from Casablanca. Someone you love must want to find W.C. Fields’ joke file under the tree Christmas morning. Or Steve McQueen’s jacket from “Le Mans.” Or an eight-page letter from the teenaged Marilyn Monroe. The stuff that dreams are made of, indeed.

You Can Own A Piece of “The Hunger Games”

Profiles in Histor announced today that it has acquired the Henry River Mill Village property, better known as “District 12” from the box office blockbuster “The Hunger Games.” The property will be auctioned off via sealed bid through Profiles in History with a bidding deadline of July 31, 2012. The property is valued in excess of 1.2 million dollars.

This unique acquisition will be shown on Syfy’s show Hollywood Treasure on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 10PM PDT. Viewers will be able to watch Joe and his team visiting “District 12,” meeting with the owner and watch as Joe is able to get the owner to entrust him to sell this ‘collectors dream’. The new season of Hollywood Treasure premieres this Tuesday, May 22 on Syfy at 10PM PDT.

“District 12” is in reality the Henry River Mill Village, a 1920s, 72-acre abandoned mill town located in North Carolina. The property exists exactly as it is seen in the film, from the bakery owned by Peeta Mellark’s family to the house where Katniss Everdeen and her sister Prim lived. It is all there. It is not a set. The production used the town buildings as they were. Who do you think will bid?

Elizabeth Taylor’s Collection to be Auctioned

The biggest movie star of all time deserves the biggest celebrity auction of all time. Christies has announced five separate auctions from the collection of Elizabeth Taylor. Her couture gowns, the costumes and props and scripts from her films, and of course her jewels are being auctioned in December and may be viewed at Rockefeller Center in New York (times to be announced). Everything from the grandest jewels (one ring is estimated at over $3 million) to a Van Gogh painting, a Versace jacket with her face all over it, and a poster of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” will be offered, with many items to be auctioned online.
