Critics Choice and Golden Globes

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 1:36 pm

I’m back from Los Angeles and an amazing night of glamour and excitement at the Critics Choice Awards.  All the star were there — from the youngest-ever Best Actress Oscar Nominee,
Quvenzhané Wallis to Daniel Day-Lewis, Stephen Spielberg, and Sally Field from “Lincoln” and Jessica Chastain, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence, and Bradley Cooper.  The high points for me were Wallis breathlessly reading her acceptance speech for best performance by an actor under age 25 from her pink-covered iPhone, Rebel Wilson’s presentation of a special comedy award to Judd Apatow (she pretended that he had written her speech) and Ben Affleck’s charming acceptance of his best director award for “Argo,” coming just hours after his inexplicable snub by the Oscars.  “I’d like to thank the members of the Academy,” he began, and brought the house down.  And I loved Anne Hathaway, accepting her best supporting actress award for “Les Miserables,” teasing us for misspelling her name on the screen.

I know I am biased, but for me the critics awards are the most meaningful because we see everything all year long, not just the discs that are circulated at awards time.  It was a blast and I’m very proud of our choices.

And the Golden Globes!  It’s the most fun to watch because they give out so many awards and because everyone just relaxes and enjoys the party.  Tina Fey and Amy Poehler should not just host everything from now on — they should run everything from now on.  They were perfect!  I loved Jodie Foster’s heartfelt speech accepting her lifetime achievement award.

CW to Broadcast the Critics Choice Awards on January 10th

Posted on January 7, 2013 at 3:59 pm

I’m thrilled to be attending the Critics Choice Awards on Thursday evening — be sure to watch it on the CW network at 8:00 pm (ET/PT) and see if you can glimpse me in my fabulous blue ball gown!  And cast your vote for one of our new categories, best film franchise!  The Critics Choice Awards are frequently a good predictor of the Golden Globes and Oscars.  And they are always very glamorous, filled with big stars, and a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to Judd Apatow’s special award — presented by Rebel Wilson!  And we hear all the nominees for Best Actor, Actress, and Director will be there!

“The BFCA is thrilled that our awards show has an exciting new broadcast partner that reaches the same audience that most frequently goes to the movies and will most enjoy our glamorous Hollywood party,” Joey Berlin, president of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, said in a statement Monday. “The CW is breaking out this fall and we expect The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards to help continue the network’s surge. With our big event falling on the very day that Oscar nominations are announced, we know everyone is going to be watching our star-studded celebration of the biggest and best movies of the year.”

The Critics Choice Award broadcast was great fun tonight with a brilliantly edited tribute to Martin Scorsese, who received a special award for his treatment of music in his movies.  Viola Davis, in my opinion the finest actor who isn’t Meryl Streep, brought me to tears with her acceptance speech for the Best Actress award she received for “The Help.”  Her Entertainment Weekly cover co-star George Clooney won Best Actor for “The Descendents.”  “The Artist” won Best Picture and Director, and all of these are now front runners for the upcoming Golden Globes, SAG awards, and the Oscars.  Stay tuned!
