Some of the best movies of the summer will not play in theaters in most areas but you do not have to wait for them to be available on DVD or cable to see them. Increasingly, video on demand is the distribution channel of choice for lower budget films. Be on the lookout for these films, which come with especially good word of mouth from showings at festivals.

My Appearance on the “On Demand” Panel at Ebertfest

Here’s the “On Demand” panel from Ebertfest — it was a thrill to be a part of this lively discussion about the pros and cons of watching films outside a movie theater. I especially enjoyed meeting Roger Ebert’s wonderful group of Demanders, the wise and witty folks who review non-theatrical releases for his website.

Chick Flicks On Demand to Support Breast Cancer Research

Warner Brothers Digital Distribution will support Susan G. Komen for the Cure in the fight against breast cancer every time one of 16 special movies is watched On Demand during a special initiative this month. So get a bowl of popcorn (and a hanky — there are some real weepies here) and settle back with “The Notebook,” “City of Angels,” “In the Land of Women,” “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” and more, and enjoy the movie while you feel good about helping to end this terrible disease. (If you feel more like laughing than crying, try some of the other choices like “Miss Congeniality 2,” “Fool’s Gold,” or “Music & Lyrics.”)
