Iconic Movie Posters

Trailers are so accessible these days that we sometimes overlook the power of a really great movie poster.  I like this list of the greatest movie posters of all time because it is a great reminder of some iconic images and because it includes commentary from designers on what makes those posters so good.  Not surprisingly, most of the film posters are horror/sci-fi/fantasy, as that provides the greatest opportunities for imagination, but there are also strong images for crime movies like “Pulp Fiction” and “The Usual Suspects.”  Without looking, can you guess what they picked as the all-time best?  You might also want to compare it to the list of best-selling movie posters.

I Miss Illustrated Movie Posters

Illustration expert Leif Peng has a gorgeous blog post about Howard Terpning, the illustrator who created many iconic movie posters, from “Gone With the Wind” to “Doctor Zhivago,” “Cleopatra,” and “The Sound of Music.”  Today movie posters almost always feature photographs of the movie’s stars, and instead of being iconic, they’re just repetitious.  Take a look at Terpning’s work, and enjoy.

Fan Posters Salute Movie Favorites

Movies inspire passion and I love this collection of posters designed by passionate fans. Not all were for real movies — some were for movies the artists would like to see and some were loving tweaks on favorite themes and characters. I especially liked the series from Pixar artist Josh Cooley, with children’s book-style illustrations from very adult films.
