Greetings from Ebertfest 2012

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 10:50 am

Greetings from Roger Ebert’s legendary film festival in his home town of Champaign/Urbana Illinois, also the home of the state university.  Once again, Roger has curated an extraordinary collection of films from the under-seen (Ebertfest was originally known as Roger Ebert’s Overlooked Film Festival) to the celebrated (this year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film and Roger’s pick for the best movie of 2011, “A Separation”).  This year’s festival is dedicated to Roger’s friend Paul Cox, a Dutch-born Australian director (“My First Wife,” “Man of Flowers,” “Innocence”), whose illness and liver transplant are the subject of one of the festival’s highlights, the documentary, “On Borrowed Time.”

Yesterday, I appeared on a panel for a discussion of the ways that “On Demand” and other delivery options are changing the world of film and moderated a discussion of “A Separation.”  Today, I will interview author/memoirist Carolyn S. Briggs following the movie made based on her book about her faith journey, “Higher Ground.”

Lists: The Funniest Movies and the All-Time Best

Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:10 pm

I always quote Mrs. Miniver when the subject of making “best of” lists of movies.  She wasn’t talking about movies but her comment is applicable in many contexts: “Indefensible but irresistible.”  And they’re a great way of finding some good movies for your Neflix queue?  Yahoo has a new list of the 100 funniest movies of all time.  And Roger Ebert, who often says how much he dislikes being asked to make lists, admits that there is one list, or really two, that he thinks is worthwhile.  Once a decade, the distinguished film journal Sight and Sound publishes all-time best lists, most recently one from critics, one from directors.  Ebert’s 2002 ballot:

Aguirre, Wrath of God (Herzog)
Apocalypse Now (Coppola)
Citizen Kane (Welles)
Dekalog (Kieslowski)
La dolce vita (Fellini)
The General (Keaton)
Raging Bull (Scorsese)
2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick)
Tokyo Story (Ozu)
Vertigo (Hitchcock)

Will he change it this year?  What would you include?

Shatner vs. Fisher on ‘Star Trek’ vs. ‘Star Wars’

Posted on November 30, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Roger Ebert reports that “Star Trek” captain William Shatner and “Star Wars” princess Carrie Fisher are engaged in a battle bigger than anything involving Klingons or The Empire — the relative merits of their two franchises.  Check out the warring YouTube videos on Ebert’s blog — lots of fun for fans of either and both.
