On DVD This Week

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 7:45 am

DVD pick of the week: The Adjustment Bureau is thought-provoking, exciting, and swooningly romantic. Writer/director George Nolfi takes on the biggest questions of all — faith and doubt, fate and free will, God, love, the meaning of existence — with an absorbing story about who we are and why we do what we do.  I have a copy to give away, so send me an email at moviemom@moviemom.com with “Adjustment Bureau” in the subject line, and don’t forget your address.

Also out this week:

Cedar Rapids “Hangover’s” Ed Helms stars as a small town insurance guy who goes to the title “big city” for an industry convention and suffers some hilarious misadventures in this very adult comedy.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Roderick Rules The second in the series based on the wildly popular book for grade and middle-schoolers has our hapless heroes facing the humiliations of middle school.

“Happythankyoumoreplease” is a smart and endearing indie from writer/director Josh Radnor of television’s “How I Met Your Mother.”

The stories are:

THE NORTH STAR (Written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, narrated by Tim Curry) In this classic storybook about lifelong learning, children of all ages will be inspired to navigate their full potential and follow their dreams.

THAT BOOK WOMAN (By Heather Henson, illustrated by David Small, narrated by Walker Harrison) This is the moving story of the Pack Horse Librarians, whose bravery and commitment helped rural children find something wonderful in books.

PLAYERS IN PIGTAILS (By Shana Corey, illustrated by Rebecca Gibbon, narrated by Zooey Deschanel) One brave girl proves that she’s in a league of her own as she strives to become a player in the first-ever All-American Girls Professional Baseball league.

YO! YES? (Written and illustrated by Chris Raschka) Two lonely boys who don’t know each other meet on a city street with a simple greeting in this heart-warming tale of friendship and cooperation.

SWAMP ANGEL (By Anne Isaacs, illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky, narrated by Alison Moorer) Angelica, or “Swamp Angel,” the greatest woodswoman in Tennessee, takes on a huge ravenous bear known as Thundering Tarnation. Can she tackle this beast?

I have one copy to give away.  Send me an email at moviemom@moviemom.com with “Star” in the subject line and tell me your favorite story about a dream.  Don’t forget your address!  I’ll pick a winner at random on June 6.

Make a Video For Moby and Win a Prize!

Posted on April 24, 2011 at 7:39 am

Make a video for one of three new Moby tracks and you could find yourself featured at the New Director’s Showcase in Cannes!  Here are the details:

This year, as part of The Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Saatchi & Saatchi partners with Vimeo and Moby to discover yet another unique filmmaking talent, with a Music Video Challenge.

The brief is simple: interpret and bring to life the idea of ‘Hello, Future’ in the form of a fantastic music video for one of Moby’s tracks from his new album, ‘Destroyed’.

The winner will be announced and their video screened at this year’s New Directors’ Showcase in Cannes, as well as on the Vimeo site.

Historically, many featured directors in the Showcase have gone on to seriously successful careers: Tarsem, Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze, Ivan Zacharias, Kinka Usher, Danny Kleinman and Jonathan Glazer included.

No pressure.

All the rules for the Moby video contest are posted on Vimeo.  Download the three Moby tracks, pick one, create a masterpiece, and good luck!
