Happy Birthday to William Shakespeare

Posted on April 23, 2013 at 8:00 am

Celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday with some of the many, many movie versions of, about, or inspired by his plays.  Coming up this spring is the “Much Ado About Nothing” in a contemporary setting — it was filmed at director Joss Whedon’s home, in black and white, starring Nathan Fillion (“Castle,” “Firefly”) and Clark Gregg (“The Avengers”).  Compare it to the Kenneth Branagh version with Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Kate Beckinsale, and Michael Keaton.

Here are some of my other favorites:

1. The Taming of the Shrew Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton bring their legendary combustible chemistry to this rambunctious version of Shakespeare’s most famous battle of the sexes.  For an extra treat, pair it with the Cole Porter musical it inspired, Kiss Me Kate.

2. Romeo + Juliet Baz Lurhmann’s dazzling version of one of the world’s great tragic love stories is a treat for the eyes, ears, and soul.  For an extra treat, pair it with the more traditional version directed by Franco Zeffirelli.

3.  Shakespeare In Love This best-picture and best-actress Oscar winner is a highly fictionalized account of the writing of “Romeo and Juliet,” with the magnificent Judi Dench, who also won an Oscar as Queen Elizabeth and a brilliantly witty script by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard.  For an extra treat, try to catch a performance of  A Cry of Players, a play about the young Shakespeare by the author of “The Miracle Worker.”

4. Henry V There is the thrill of the St. Crispian’s Day speech.  There is the heart-wrenching parting with the old friends who cannot be a part of the young king’s new life.  But for me, the greatness of this play is that in the midst of all of the drama, Shakespeare inserts a scene of a young French princess trying to learn English so she can understand the man who is walloping her countrymen — and makes it work.  For an extra treat, compare it to the Laurence Olivier version, very much the product of its WWII era.

5. The Tempest My own favorite of Shakespeare’s plays is thrilling with Helen Mirren as Prospera, a wizard who calls on all her powers of enchantment to provide a happy ending for her daughter and justice for herself.  For an extra treat, try the space-age adaptation,  Forbidden Planet.

List: Dinosaur Movies

Posted on April 4, 2013 at 8:00 am

This week’s 20th anniversary re-release of “Jurassic Park” is a good reminder to check out some other dino delights.  These are some family favorites, most of which have the same plot: the dinosaurs have to leave their home to move to a safer place.

1. “The Land Before Time” A group of little dinosaur pals go on a journey to find a safer place to live in this family favorite that sparked a series.

2. “Walking with Dinosaurs” This TV series combines real-life settings with CGI to explore the world of the dinosaurs.

3. “Fantasia” Disney’s animated classic set to symphonic music has a segment with dinosaurs set to Strindberg’s “Rites of Spring.”

4. “Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend” A couple protects surviving dinosaurs from a predatory scientist in this film starring William Katt, Sean Young, Patrick McGoohan, and future “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes.

5. “Dinosaur” Same plot.  But this one has voices of “The Good Wife’s” Julianna Margulies and “Nashville’s” Hayden Panettiere.

Movies to Celebrate Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day

Posted on March 12, 2013 at 3:59 pm

St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend and one way to celebrate is to watch one of these great movies from or set in Ireland:

1. The Quiet Man John Wayne plays American Sean Thornton (John Wayne), who returns to in Innisfree, the small, beautiful Irish village where he was born, to buy his family’s old home. He meets fiery Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O’Hara), courts her, marries, her, and then really has to win her as both must learn some lessons about intimacy, pride, and trust. Yes, there are some moments that seem sexist but the underlying story is as glorious as the spectacular landscape and as touching as the endearing characters.

2. The Secret of Roan Inish A little Irish girl named Fiona goes to stay with her grandparents and becomes convinced that her baby brother, whose cradle was carried off to sea years before, is alive and being cared for by Selkies, seals who can transform themselves into humans. This is a quiet film, filled with lovely images that convey the magic surrounding anyone who believes in it. It explores themes of loyalty and commitment to family and following your heart.

3. The Commitments A group of hardscrabble Irish musicians come together to firm an American-style soul band and perform songs like “Mustang Sally” and “Try a Little Tenderness.” Look for future Frames and Once performer Glen Hansard in the group. (Mature material)

4. Once The best song Oscar went to this bittersweet film about an Irish musician (Glen Hansard) who meets a pianist and singer (Markéta Irglová) from the Czech Republic.

5. Millions The Oscar-winning director of “Slumdog Millionaire,” Danny Boyle, also shows his gift for working with children in “Millions,” the story of a young boy who finds a bag of money.

6. My Left Foot Daniel Day-Lewis won an Oscar for his portrayal of Christy Brown in this true story of a writer and painter who was paralyzed and could only use his left foot — and of his indomitable mother (Oscar-winner Brenda Fricker).

7. The Secret of Kells This quietly exquisite animated film was a surprise Oscar nominee. It is about an 11th century boy who lives in a monastery run by his stern uncle and the gorgeous illuminated manuscript that changes his life.

8. Circle of Friends Minnie Driver and Chris O’Donnell star in Maeve Binchy’s story of love and friendship in 1950’s Ireland.

9. “Hear My Song” A fast-talking small-time promoter has to persuade a retired performer to sing again.

10. In the Name of the Father Day-Lewis again, in another true story, this time the story of a father and son who were imprisoned for an IRA bombing. Emma Thompson plays his dedicated lawyer and Pete Postlethwaite was nominated for an Oscar as the father who ends up in prison as well.

Rob Sheffields’ Best Rock Movie Moments

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 3:59 pm

Rob Sheffield is one of my favorite writers and I love his books about popular music.  For Rolling Stone, he has created a gallery of the all-time best rock moments in movies, with irresistible clips from the “Wayne’s World” rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody” to John Cusack holding the boom box over his head to serenade Ione Skye with Peter Gabriel in “Say Anything” and “Tiny Dancer” in “Almost Famous.”  It’s a great mix of covers and originals, classics and should-be-classics.  But he should have included “Blackboard Jungle,” the first movie with a rock soundtrack.  And I don’t know how he left out my own all-time favorite, from “The Blues Brothers:”
