Leaving her seemingly glamorous Hollywood life on hold, Evie Lee is forced to return to her small hometown of Balsam Falls, Tennessee and her family’s once-thriving Christmas tree farm to attend her father’s unexpected funeral. As the eldest sibling, she finds herself executor of an estate that owes a massive inheritance tax, much to her younger brother’s dismay. Torn between pursuing her music career and saving her family’s legacy, she must decide what it really means to find her place in the world.

Labor Day 2014: Movies About Unions

Today we pay tribute to workers, especially those who worked for better conditions for everyone.

Sally Field won an Oscar for this real-life story about a courageous woman who helped mill workers form a union.

Doris Day plays a union worker who falls for a new guy in management but doesn’t lose sight of the seven and a half cent raise the workers are bargaining for.

John Sayles “Matewan” tells the story of mine workers fighting for safer conditions.

A Capitol Fourth! Tomorrow Night on PBS

Tune in to PBS tomorrow night for the live broadcast of A Capitol Fourth.  This year’s performers will include Patti LaBelle, Jordin Sparks, Michael McDonald the Jersey Boy himself, Frankie Valli.  And composer John Williams will conduct the choir and orchestra in a new arrangement of our national anthem.  Here’s one of the highlights from last year’s show, with Megan Hilty.
