Ask the Movie Mom

Thanks for the great questions!

This is an old romantic movie, early 90’s I think. The leading male role plays an owner of a flower shop who also attends to deliveries. He is walking past an apartment building one night and looks up to see a beautiful woman crying though her window. The woman is the leading lady and I can’t remember the reason for her tears. However she is a young woman who has no family, either orphaned or given up to state care, again sorry can’t remember clearly. They meet up, he falls madly in love with her, but she is afraid of love and can’t commit. I remember a couple of other scenes, one where he surprises her with a room full of beautiful purple roses and another where he shows her his apartment rooftop which he has transformed into an amazing gardeners delight. I also remember a scene where he is talking to her about his job being the best job because it puts a smile on people’s faces when he delivers them a bouquet of flowers. I think that the way they meet is that he sends her flowers after he sees her crying through the window and she goes to the flower shop to try to find out who the mystery man is. I hope this is enough information and would greatly appreciate any information that you may provide.

That’s “Bed of Roses” with Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson.

I saw a movie when I was younger, and I can’t recall the title. I was hoping you could help. Problem is it was a while ago and I was young so I don’t recall many details. Here is what I know (but can’t be certain on):

– early 90’s
– the protagonist is waiting for and then riding a bus. He has his father’s ashes, and pretty much most of the movie is him remembering back to when he was a young kid, during summer break.
– things get hazy for me here, but I think he goes on a journey with an older girl, his babysitter, and she let’s him smoke, and they go swimming in the ocean, etc. I particularly remember one scene they are driving in a convertible.
– the movie ends when it flashes back and he arrives at the same place where they went swimming when they were younger; he then scatters his dad’s ashes into the ocean. I might be wrong in the details, but I hope that gives you some kind of idea of which movie this is.

Not quite what you describe, but it sounds like “Stealing Home” with Jodie Foster as the babysitter. It is her ashes he is carrying on the bus. Thanks for writing!

Hi Nell, I’m back for another question. What is the name of a movie made for TV, starring Ann Heche & Eric Roberts, where she starts an affair with him so that he becomes so jealous of anyone romantically involved with her, that he kills her former husband or boyfriend? Which is what she intended for him to do all along. I think they both end up in prison if I remember correctly. OK, work your magic!

It’s called “Fatal Desire.”

It was a war drama that a man loves a married woman. and when a bomb hit their secret love place the lady swore to God that if he lived she would not see him again. What was the name of this movie?

That is “The End of the Affair,” with Ralph Feinnes and Julianne Moore, based on a book by Graham Greene by the same name. There is also an earlier version made in 1955 starring Deborah Kerr.

I saw a film when I was young and I can only remember certain bits from it and I can’t remember the title. Basically all I can remember is a woman choosing between two men, one man that had everything and one that had nothing. She was obviously in love with the guy who had nothing because when she kissed him she went into this pink cloud, whereas she felt nothing for the other.

That’s “The Girl Most Likely” with Jane Powell and Cliff Robertson.

I saw a movie when I was a kid. These two children went to visit this strange man and ended up playing this weird game with the man where they tried to kill each other. I remember that it wa not violent but more subtle. I think it had a scene where the kids tried to poison the strange man with mushrooms.

That is “Let’s Kill Uncle” (sometimes known as “Let’s Kill Uncle Before Uncle Kills Us”). And you’re right about the mushrooms. It’s not available on DVD at this time but you may be able to find it some late night on cable.

I am looking for an older movie. The only part of the movie I can remember is that this guy had a magic bow that always hit the enemy in the heart.

That’s “The Archer: Fugitive from the Empire.”

I am looking for the title of an older movie. It has to be at least 25 years old. It’s about a boy named Ivan and he goes out to capture the firebirds. He captures them and takes them to the king. Somehow he gets this talking magic pony and by the end of the movie, he has to do these tasks, where he jumps into hot oil and other stuff and comes out this total stud and marries the princess. There is also an evil character that tries to thwart him. I understand this is quite vague, but I am desperate!!

That’s “Ivan and His Magic Pony,” also known as “The Humpbacked Horse.”

I’m looking for the title of a movie (40’s- 50’s?) about a rich man who decides to hike around the country alone. He loses his memory and is jailed/sent to a work farm. When he hears about a news article about a missing rich man presumed dead he confesses to killing that man. When the news of his confession is reported one of his staff reads it and goes to the work farm to rescue him.

One of my very favorites! That’s “Sullivan’s Travels,” written and directed by the great Preston Sturges, starring Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake.

I’m desperately hoping you can help me learn the title of a movie and it’s availability to the public. It’s an old 1930’s-40’s movie with two girl (friends, sisters?) getting ready and going on a cruise to Europe. They buy cheep fur coats and the fur keeps falling out everywhere. One gets sick right before getting off the ship in England? And she pretends with the help of friend/sister to be well. I think she was sick with chicken pox or measles. They meet two handsome men and even go to a maze garden together. That’s all I got. It’s a light happy movie that I found delightful…..but it’s now driving me insane trying to find what it’s called! Help! Please?

I love that movie! It’s “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay,” based on the true story of the adventures of Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimborough. Thanks for remembering this darling movie with such fondness, and glad I was able to help.

Years ago I watched an old comedy movie about a family that vacationed at a beach house. I remember a teenage daughter possibly a younger brother and their mother. I don’t remember the father much. He may have stayed home to work. Their were scenes of the daughter and friends, dating etc. It included some characters that we’re bird watchers visiting in the area. They we’re so funny because they would walk like the birds as they walked around making bird sounds looking for a rare bird. I cannot remember the actors although I know some of them were popular at the time the film was made. It may have been made in black and white.
My husband has become intersted in bird watching and I would love to find this film for him to watch. I would really appreciate any help you can give. I have tried searching but with so little to go on I didn’t have any luck.

Great movie! “Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation,” with James Stewart. John McGiver plays the bird watcher. Enjoy bird and movie watching!

I heard about this movie from someone who saw it and think it sounds good.  It is an older movie and apparently is about a lighthouse keeper that has a number of friends he talks with in the lighthouse.  Part of the twist is that these people he were talking to had died in a shipwreck years ago and were ghosts.  May not have the plot exactly right but if you know of any movie like this would like to know.
Thank you.

That’s “Thunder Rock” with Michael Redgrave.

I’m trying to find movie where social cultures are reversed. African-Americans hold higher social status than whites. I think Harry Belafonte played in it.

Yes! That is “White Man’s Burden.”

I am looking for an old movie that my grandmother owned. A group of sisters that would go through cave at night into a fantasy land where they would be dressed up and dancing. Please tell me you have some idea about the name of this film?

That sounds like one portion of “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm,” which was about the brothers who collected folk tales and fairy tales. One of their stories was about the seven dancing princesses, and I hope that’s it!

This is a real hard ask I know. I saw a movie many years ago, the plot involved a scientist of some variety and he conspires with the wife of a fellow scientist to murder the husband. He goes about this by firstly falsely establishing he has a mental condition. He then openly shoots the man at a meeting or some such. He makes no attempt to escape and is subsequently convicted but considered insane and sent to an asylum, hoping to wait out until he can be declared cured and rejoin his lover. He discovers that the wife has used him when he see her with another man after she visits him. He confesses his crime and naturally is not believed.

That movie is “Brainstorm” with Jeff Hunter and Anne Francis. It was released in 1965.

I’m trying to remember a movie from the early 80’s. the star was a blonde young male actor. In the movie he had some kind of affliction with movie star quotes similar to Jim Carrey in “The Cable Guy”) He ended up painting his face half black and white and went on a crazy bender? I thought his name was Christopher Atkins , but it is not. The movie was a drama, and the character hung out in movie theatres. Any ideas?

That’s “Fade to Black” with Dennis Christopher.

Wow, Sorry to have so little information to give you. Since I really liked this movies you would think I could remember something else about it. Here goes.

A restaurant owner getting older wants to pass her restaurant on to new owner in need of new life. I think she advertised somehow and accepted letters from people telling a bit about their story. Chose a girl. She came and worked there with owner for period of time gaining wisdom and in the end the business. Can you help? Been wondering about this for years.

Lovely movie! That is “The Spitfire Grill.” Enjoy!

Over 30 years ago – maybe 40 years ago, my mother and I (when I was 10 years old or so) watched a movie that ended when a man was about to be lynched during a severe rainstorm. There was a huge tree on the property of a blind woman who took the man in and I seem to remember that she had romantic feelings for him. Anyhow when he was just about to be hanged by the mob – lightning or something caused the tree to fall. Beneath it was a large cache of gold that the woman gave to the mob in exchange for the man’s life.

That is “The Hanging Tree.”

I watched a miniseries on TV that starred Genie Francis & Bruce Boxlightner, about a family starting a business developing rare & one of a kind perfumes that would add to their vast fortune. As a test of his worth, the grandfather put his grandson in charge of the whole project. There were relatives who were very jealous of him and wanted nothing more than for him to fail. The main character is a woman with big curly red hair. She’s divorced with one daughter and she is rich and glamorous. She’s sad and wants to help her daughter so then becomes her girl scouts leader. They have a girl scout competitor who is really aggressive. at the end they have a girl scout competition and during this the woman (main character) gets stuck on a tree trunk trying to get across a hole, she gets over and they end up winning because the mean lady gets stuck in a hole and hurts her ankle and they help her and carry her back. Hope u can get this! Driving me crazy!

Answer: That sounds like “Troop Beverly Hills” with Shelly Long.

I remember a children’s movie from probably the early to mid 80’s about children who invent a flying ‘bubble’ with their computer in the basement of their house. They then make it large enough to ride in and have some fantastic adventures. Do you have any idea what this movie is?

Answer: I believe you are thinking of “Explorers.”

A father and son winde up toy mouses that are connected together. I believe the story takes place during Christmas holidays. Their adventures are on city streets and in a sewer with rats. A crow trying to catch them. I remember the movie from HBO as a kid. It was late 70’s or early 80’s. The movie starts with a scene of a snow falling and looking thru a toy store window from outside. The toy father and son mouse were on display. Vague memory of movie but I always think of it. Please help if you can. Thank you.

Answer: That’s “The Mouse and His Child” — great movie!

That’s Explorers with Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix.

A father and son wind up toy mouses that are connected together. A lovely movie: “The Mouse and His Child.”

I’m searching for a film title for a friend. they only know the plot and saw it a few years back on Sundance. A boy and girl are friends and play a game involving a box. the game consisits of dares. Whoever has the box dares the other to do something and if they do they in turn get the box. they grow older and apart but still continue the game. This person thinks the film is European. possibly French or Italian. would love an answer to this. Thanks.

That’s a Belgian film released in 2003, Love Me If You Dare originally titled “Jeux D’Enfants.”

A man and woman meet as they are both planning their weddings while their future partners are busy elsewhere. They spend time together and start to fall in love but in the end go their own way. Later they both cancel their wedding but don’t know this of each other. The man then writes a book about the whole experience. Upon hearing about the book the woman realizes it’s not too late and looks up the man. Happy ending.

That’s It Had to Be You with Michael Vartan and Natasha Henstridge.

The movie was in black & white and I believe it was made in the 40s, maybe 50s… I’ve seen it when I was young. A woman living in a big house near the sea thinks that the ghost who is haunting her house is her mother’s, and she feels protected but she is in danger. Another ghost, “the nurse” I think, is her real mother and protects her, but she doesn’t trust her. At the end she knows the truth…

One of my favorite spooky movies! Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey in The Uninvited, which introduced the classic song, “Stella By Starlight.”

Do you know a movie, I think an American one, in which at one point a shady psycho/hitman who wants something from our hero, gives a pet cat a drop of LSD at an apartment, which kills it? At the end the stand off involves the bad guy unwittingly drinking the LSD overdose which the girl friend of leading man has swapped for drink.

Great one! That is Dollars with Goldie Hawn and Warren Beatty.

Thanks for these great questions!

I saw the trailer for a movie but I forgot what it was called. There’s a girl who goes to seek out all her exes to see if any of them are still single and if anything has changed with them. Her neighbor accompanies her on her search for these ex boyfriends.  She discovers that a lot of them are better off without her.  If you know what this movie is called I’d really appreciate it.

That’s “What’s Your Number?” with Anna Faris.  It opens in late September.

This movie is set around in the 60s. Rich white family with a young daughter hires a housekeeper who is black with a daughter the same age. The two girls grow up together and are very close. The dark girl hates being dark skinned and blames her mother and rebels as she gets older and runs away. Her mother tracks her down years later as the mother is dying. She finds her daughter working in a strip club & the daughter denies knowing her around people, she tells the daughter she is dying. The daughter tells her she hates her and to never come around again. The mother goes back home where she’s still living with the white family and not long after she dies. The daughter comes half-way through her mother’s funeral chasing the hearse down the road terribly sorry screaming for her mum.

That’s a classic: Imitation of Life with Lana Turner and Sandra Dee and the biggest onscreen funeral scene ever. It’s a remake, and the original version with Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers is also worth watching.

There is a movie I watched partly a few years back and I don’t know its name or any of the cast or crew. All I know is that there were two ladies I think they were on a train. One of them, I think recently widowed, is off to meet her husband’s family for the first time. The other is poor and pregnant I think. There was an incident not sure what but it left the widowed woman dead and the other I think unconscious. Their identity somehow got switched in the process. Thus the poor pregnant woman was taken to meet the family (in-laws) of the one that died and she tried to fit in.

That is “Mrs. Winterbourne” with Ricki Lake and Brendan Fraser, a remake of “No Man of Her Own” with Barbara Stanwyck.  Enjoy!

I remember watching a movie – racing cars – and in the movie was an Olds 442 and a Dodge Challenger. Then one guy ended up getting an old Willy’s and dropping a hemi into it for racing. It was on television. I just don’t know the name and would like to try and watch it again.

That’s Vanishing Point with Barry Newman — and great cinematography.

It is a comedy that is set in the Renaissance to the Robin Hood time period/theme. The only part I really remember about it is that there is two brothers that feel exactly what the other is going through…for example if one gets hurt the other feels it, if one has to pee the other goes for him. Its not Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

That’s Cheech and Chong’s version of “The Corsican Brothers.”

A general description of the storyline: a young man runs away from home; he is lying on a park bench, when a large head with a white beard appears. The young man holds onto the beard, and is brought to a fantasyland. He’s given a cloak of invisibility, and a sword that can cut through stone. He is to use the sword to penetrate the stone around the heart of the villain.

That’s “The Land of Faraway.” It is sometimes called “Mio in the Land of Faraway.” Enjoy!

What’s the name of the movie with a young African-American woman who was really successful in New York, but had a heart attack and was told to take some time out off work and go somewhere different?  She thought carefully and decided to go live with her foster mother in a small town, where she was with her other son and they both fell in love. At the end of the movie the guy goes looking for her in New York, but she decided she should relocate to the small town to be with him?

That’s the BET movie “Commitments” with Victoria Dillard.  It’s a good one!

I was wondering, if you could assist me by providing the name of a certain movie. The title has slipped my mind, but I recall exactly what it was about. The story (which I’m not 100% sure but I think it’s based on a true story…) is about a girl who is hit by a vehicle and can no longer move. She is somewhat paralyzed… but, she is extremely smart and her mother decides to go to school with her so she is able to assist her daughter. The young lady ends up going to Harvard (or some other well known college…) and her mother goes along with her. She meets a guy there and falls in love with him, but in the end, he is engaged to another lady.

That is “The Brooke Ellison Story.”

I remember this movie, probably made for TV, in the mid 70s, maybe 80s…A lot of turmoil in the country, and the youth of the country took over. Lowered the voting age, and all the ages for holding offices. The part I remember from the commercials and the movie was of this boy, acting almost possessed, and the line, “GIVE ME THE POWER…” delivered as if he was almost going into a trance…do you know the name of this movie?

That’s Wild in the Streets with Christopher Jones.

Recently I’ve been having flashbacks about a movie I once watched when I was little, about a little girl who has an imaginary friend ( I think he dresses in all green, like a leprechaun) and he’s very annoying, makes her steal and break things (which she gets blamed and punished for) so she locks him away (in a jewelry box, I think) but later starts missing him… and then there seems to be a big chunk of the movie missing from my memory but all I remember is that the girl forgets about him over the years and the imaginary friend re-appears but this time the girl’s grown up (in her 20’s) so he has to leave her which makes her very sad. In the end that imaginary character moves on to being another little girl’s imaginary friend and the movie ends shortly after.

That’s Drop Dead Fred with the wonderful Phoebe Cates.

I remember watching a movie at least ten to fifteen years ago, perhaps even longer than that where a young professional male dancer loses his usual dance partner and has to find another. He ends up with a geeky girl with glasses, frizzy hair tied back in a ponytail who doesn’t look like she can do much dancing. When she shows him her style he is shocked to see she can dance and she has a special style that he learns from her. She loses the glasses does her hair and starts looking prettier until she goes from ugly duckling to swan and a romance between them forms. There’s a scene where he visits her family who I think are either Latina or Mexican where her dance style originates. I can’t for the life of me remember what it is called and I’ve looked around. It’s an American film and my guess is it could be anywhere between 1980 to 2005 though I’m guessing it’s more likely to be in the 90’s. That was when I watched it so it may be older than that but not by much.

I love that movie! It’s Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom.

I want to know the name of a movie about a guy who realizes that he is actually a character in a book and is about to be killed. He wants to find the author to get him to not kill him. It starts out with a narrator who describes the life of this guy, whose life is very regimented, what time he gets up, how long he brushes his teeth, goes to work and so on. I know I saw it quite some time ago, and I can’t remember the name of the movie or the star…

One of my favorites! That’s Stranger Than Fiction with Will Ferrell and Emma Thompson.

About 15 or more years ago I saw a movie that I thought was called “Bug”. It was about these beetle like bugs that came out of a earthquake. They were able to produce electric and in one scene I remember spelled words on the wall with their bodies. I think it was a “B” flick but I would love to see it again. If you could also let me know if I could purchase it somewhere.

That’s Bug from the great William Castle.

This is a old movie about children that passed through this fog or smoke would act really strange and would try to get adults to hug them. If you hugged them it was like they drained all your life from you and of course you died.

That is The Children of Ravensbeck.

Synopsis; a computer expert has to save his girlfriend from a serial killer 8 – 12 hours in the future. His only help is his computer, now strapped to his wrist “Excalibur 8.” I believe Richard Moll is in the movie and plays the role of “the grim reaper” type who took him and put him in this predicament! Please, I hope you can help!

Yep, that’s Dungeonmaster, also known as “Ragewar: The Challenges of Excalibrate.”

This movie is about a young couple who I think give up a son, the son becomes a great piano player I think. The parents through fate find their son years later.

That lovely film is August Rush.

Q: I came across a black and white movie on TV about 20 years ago. It might have had something to do with WWII because the plot revolved around a man who appeared to be the last man on earth. He goes to a department store and takes a few mannequins with him to a nearby house. He becomes friends with the mannequins, talking with them and smoking cigarettes with them. At one point he gets angry with one mannequins and throws it off the balcony. A woman walking by sees this and screams. The man realizes there is another living person and runs after her. They take shelter together, and at first their relationship is very awkward. He tries to give her a hair cut but butchers her hair. That’s about all I saw, but I’ve never been able to find this movie again. I think the title had something to do with “the blood” or “the devil” or both. I don’t remember.
