Movies for Veteran’s Day

As we remember and thank those who have served our country and defended our freedom, these movies help us begin to understand their contribution.
The Messenger One of the finest young actors working today, Ben Foster, stars with Woody Harrelson and Samantha Morton in this powerful story of an injured soldier assigned to visit the families of soldiers to deliver the news that they have been killed.
Gardens of Stone The detail assigned to Arlington Cemetery is responsible for honoring the war dead. James Caan, James Earl Jones, and D.B. Sweeney star in this moving tribute to the soldiers who pay tribute.
Taking Chance Kevin Bacon stars in this fact-based story of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl who volunteered to escort a fallen soldier’s remains when he found out they shared the same home town. It is a quietly touching drama about how the journey affected Strobl and the people along the way.

I have a suggestion for MovieMom fans – watch these, or many of the other honorable movies that give tribute to veterans, tomorrow or in a few days. Take the same amount of time and go meet up with a vet or two or more and listen to their stories. Time could not be better spent today, and you will have a greater appreciation for the stories in the movies when you do watch them.

I haven’t seen any of these films, but I’ve heard great things about “The Messenger” and “Taking Chance.” Good suggestion, jestrfyl.

Do you have any suggested PG-13, PG, or G rated movies related to Veterans’ Day for 7th & 8th gr. social studies class? I usually end up with National Geographic: Arlington – Field of Honor or Foot soldier: Today and the 21st century. Thanks!

  Yes, Valerie, I think it is very appropriate, especially if they are capable of thoughtful, quiet viewing. If you prepare them ahead of time, I think it is an excellent choice.

Thank you for your comments and your suggestion. I have found it in a nearby library so I will be previewing it before our class pre-discussion. Based on the trailer, it looks like an outstanding film.

  Thanks for writing! Yes, technically Memorial Day is to honor the dead and Veterans Day is to honor the veterans. But both are always a good reason to remember both, especially in light of all the unrelated events and festivities.
