Smile of the Week — Video from Ocoee Middle School

Posted on March 5, 2010 at 1:08 pm

This joyous salute to books and reading is guaranteed to cheer your day. Bravo to the teachers, the administration, the librarians, and most of all the kids at the Ocoee Middle School. Keep reading!

Thanks to the wonderful Jennifer Farrington of the fabulous Chicago Children’s Museum for sharing this with me. And props to the Black Eyed Peas for giving permission to use their song.
I was very happy to hear that response videos are coming in. I’ll update you on the best ones I see. If your school makes one, send it to me!

  1. I LOVE THIS VIDEO. Being a HUGE fan of reading, reading aloud, and listening to storytelling and audiobooks, this is joyful to watch.
I had a discussion with a group of friends recently about what books did we evangelize and I mentioned Jim Trelease’s “The Read-Aloud Handbook” the 2006-2207 edition. I don’t know if it’s been updated since that edition. I’ve given over 100 copies through the years. The first part of the book is an engaging discussion about the importance of reading aloud and the research which has shown the positive effects on academics and behavior. The second part of the book is a wonderful treasury of read aloud books broken down into infant through middle school sections. I highly recommend it to anyone who may need guidance on choosing books or wants additional suggestions.
Thanks for letting me share and THANKS for sharing this wonderful video.

  2. Thanks for this video, I can’t wait to show it to my students. We were just discussing what kind of song and dance we could do to celebrate reading. The students in this video did a FABULOUS job!
If we come up with something, I’ll send it to you.
