Spirit Awards — The Best in Independent Films

I admit that the awards show I enjoy most each year is the “Spirit Awards,” and not just because I am lucky enough to get to vote for them.  They truly reflect their name in paying tribute to films that are made more for love than for money.  And they honor and support the small, the new, the passionate, and the struggle.  This year’s winners are:

Gift Guide from UltraViolet: Freeing Kids from Gender Stereotypes

Posted on December 12, 2012 at 3:00 pm

McKenna Pope, a 13-year-old from Garfield, New Jersey, wondered why she saw men cooking all the time on television but the Easy-Bake Oven was being marketed as though it was just for girls.  She started a petition on Change.org and has gained widespread support, including the endorsement of male chefs.  So it was great to find this list of toys and other gifts that are marketed free from gender stereotypes from UltraViolet, including great movies like Whale Rider.  Bravo!

Fabulous mash-up of every movie released this year:

I love Michael Sheen’s “Oh, my” from “Breaking Dawn, Part 2.”  And the “Step Up: Revolution” dancers.

How many movies can you identify?  The full list is here.

Comic-Con: Costumes!

Posted on July 18, 2012 at 8:00 am

My most popular Comic-Con post each year is the one with the pictures of the attendees in costume.  I took more than 400 photos, and these are some of my favorites. Those are Playboy Bunny Avengers!  You can see Thor’s hammer and Captain America’s shield. Superman is waiting in line to order a hot dog.  Not sure who that alien-looking guy or blue lady are, but I recognize the Batman villains, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Nurse Joker (with a Spidey back-pack — a bit of a DC/Marvel mash-up) and of course Superman and Clark Kent. The Steampunkers always have great imagination and attention to detail. And I love the tiny Batman with Daddy Robin.
