Let It Go from “Frozen” — in 25 Languages

And the LA Times explains how they do it.

As the film business has become an increasingly global one, Dempsey’s job has become ever more complex, with languages in emerging territories added every year. The newest additions include Bengali, Malay and Vietnamese. While “Frozen” is available in 41 languages, Dempsey recalls casting for about 15 languages on “The Lion King” in 1994….For Dempsey, “Frozen’s” music posed a special challenge: He had to mimic the vocal tone and texture of Menzel, a Tony Award-winning soprano famous for her penetrating pipes. “Idina has one of the best voices, period, in terms of her smooth tone, the warmth when she hits the lower end,” Dempsey said. “In certain territories — Taiwan, Cantonese — the voice might want to be thin because that’s part of the culture. It was always a challenge to find her match.”

List: Hercules Movies

Posted on January 10, 2014 at 3:59 pm

2014 will see not one but two different movies about Hercules, the mythical half-god who had super-strength. This week’s release stars “Twilight’s” Kellan Lutz and upcoming we have “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Joseph Fiennes, and Ian McShane. In case you’d like more, here are some other versions of the Hercules story, mostly better known for their cheesiness and bad acting than their cinematic quality, but all fun to watch.

Hercules (1997) Not exactly a Disney animation classic, but this entertaining version has Danny DeVito as a grouchy satyr and one of Disney’s best villains in James Woods as Hades.

Hercules (1958) Body builder/weightlifter Steve Reeves stars in this low-budget epic that is still a lot of fun.

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Kevin Sorbo starred in this series shot in New Zealand.

Wait, Disney Animation Villains Got Married?

Posted on December 14, 2013 at 3:59 pm

Disney is planning something called “The Descendants.”  descendants

In a present day idyllic kingdom, the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s iconic Beauty and the Beast) is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters. These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evvie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. However, the evil teens face a dilemma. Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?

So, some will come good, some will go bad and there’s going to be a bit of star-crossed love. And that love might even save the day.

I’ve got to say, this does not sound like a great idea to me.
