Guidelines for Family Movie Night from Common Sense Media

Posted on November 17, 2013 at 8:00 am

Common Sense Media has some common sense guidelines for family movie night.  The range of opportunities for solitary consumption of media has led to less time for families to sit down at the same time to enjoy — and talk about — the same movie.  CSM suggests making it a regular part of the schedule and taking turns selecting the movie.  Younger children will enjoy the pride and sense of responsibility that comes from making a choice.  Families should not object when it is the same movie they have already seen — that is appropriate at this stage of development and it is the movies seen over and over again that become part of family lore.  When I was growing up, our family watched “On the Town” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” countless times.  And wise parents can learn a lot from the selections of middle schoolers and teenagers.

Who Is Simon Miller? Family Night TV

Posted on August 4, 2011 at 8:00 am

The latest in the Family Movie Night series on NBC is Who Is Simon Miller? this Saturday, August 6, at 8/7 central.    It is the story of a family discovery that the husband and father they thought they knew had another life — maybe many other lives.  Stars include Loren Dean (“Say Anything” and “Mumford”) and Christine Baranski (“Mamma Mia”).  It is an exciting spy story and a warm-hearted family drama.  And it raises some good questions for family discussion about when it can be difficult to find the time and the right words to tell our families the things they should know — and about how getting away from our daily concerns can strengthen family bonds, even in a high-stress environment.

‘Field of Vision’ — New on Family Movie Night

Posted on June 8, 2011 at 12:00 pm

The latest in the wonderful “Family Movie Night” series from Wal-Mart and P&G is “Field of Vision,” the story of a high school football star who has to choose between his team and his conscience when he sees filmed evidence that his teammates have been bullying a new classmate.

Faith Ford co-stars as the mother of the school’s quarterback (Tony Oller).  If he tells the coach what he saw, they may be disqualified from the championship game.  And the camera’s footage has more secrets to reveal as well.  This is an important movie for families to share as a way to talk about some very difficult subjects, not just bullying but about finding the moral courage to decide between competing loyalties.  It will be available on DVD after the broadcast.

The quote in the movie is from Hillel: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am ‘I’? And if not now, when?
