The Real Story: Franklin Roosevelt and His Cousin Daisy

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 3:59 pm

This week’s release, “Hyde Park on Hudson,” tells the story of the visit by King George V (“The King’s Speech” king) and Queen Elizabeth (the parents of the present queen) to the home of President Franklin Roosevelt, played by Bill Murray.  And it is told from the point of view of FDR’s quiet cousin Margaret “Daisy” Suckley (pronounced “sook-lee”), the President’s distant cousin, played by Laura Linney.  The true nature of their relationship was only revealed after Daisy died at age 99 and her treasure trove of correspondence with the President was found in a suitcase under her bed.  The story is told in Closest Companion: The Unknown Story of the Intimate Friendship Between Franklin Roosevelt and Margaret Suckley by historian Geoffrey Ward, and there is more information in Franklin and Lucy: President Roosevelt, Mrs. Rutherfurd, and the Other Remarkable Women in His Life.  The only man to be elected President four times and one of the towering historical figures of the 20th century, Roosevelt has been portrayed in movies like Sunrise At Campobello and Eleanor and Franklin.

Bill Murray Plays FDR in “Hyde Park on the Hudson”

We’ve seen Bill Murray turn in some impressive performances in dramas as well as comedies, but it still seems like quite a challenge for him to take on the part of and icon like patrician four-time President  Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  But this trailer for “Hyde Park on the Hudson,” based on the events described in the book The Roosevelts and the Royals: Franklin and Eleanor, the King and Queen of England, and the Friendship that Changed History, looks wonderful.  Yes, this is the same king and queen portrayed in The King’s Speech.  And another note — perhaps as fair play after Meryl Streep played Margaret Thatcher, in this film Eleonor Roosevelt is played by British actress Olivia Williams.

Sunrise at Campobello

“Plot: This is the story of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Ralph Bellamy), from the time he became disabled by polio to his comeback into mainstream politics, as he introduced candidate Al Smith to the Democratic convention of 1928.

Discussion: Franklin, a man of unquenchable vigor, was forced to reconsider his future when his legs became paralyzed. His close friend and political advisor, Louis Howe (Hume Cronyn) tells him he has two choices, to become a “”country squire”” and write books, or to get up and get back into politics. His mother urges him not to overdo: “”I don’t want to see you hurt.””
