Turner Classic Movies has another series of tributes to “Trailblazing Women” Tuesdays and Thursdays this month. It is hosted by Illeana Douglas, actress, writer, and granddaughter of two stars of Hollywood’s golden age, Melvyn Douglas and Helen Gahagan.

Her co-hosts include many of the actresses who are being honored this month, including Rita Moreno, Jane Fonda, Lee Grant, and Bette Midler.

Tiffany Vazquez Joins TCM

Posted on July 9, 2016 at 12:13 pm

Turner Classic Movies has brought in a new host to join Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz. The first woman host is Tiffany Vazquez, and she first came to the attention of the classic-movie network as the grand prize winner of its Ultimate Fan Contest.

In an interview with Jezebel, she talked about some of her favorite TCM movies (some of my favorites, too).

I particularly like when I just find a movie really funny. People think humor changes so much. I mean, you might watch a standup special from ten years ago and not really laugh anymore—sometimes jokes just don’t work anymore. But for some reason, so many comedies that are some of my favorite classic films are just, I think, always going to be funny. The Man Who Came to Dinner—I think that is a movie that is wildly impressive, probably influential to something like Veep now, because they both have the best insults I’ve ever heard in my life. So eloquent of an insult that you really can’t come back from it—you just really have to walk away.

And then there are so many women that I gravitate towards. I love Katherine Hepburn, I love Bette Davis. I love commentary on Hollywood, so Sunset Boulevard is one of my favorite movies. I love adolescence in films—Rebel Without a Cause is one of my favorites. And people who’ve had to struggle and should have had way bigger careers than they had also interest me. So I really love the Nicholas Brothers, and I think that their scene in Stormy Weather is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen in my life.

Watch Movies Banned by the National Legion of Decency on TCM

Posted on February 24, 2016 at 8:00 am

For more than 100 years, movies have been offending someone, and no group has spent more time on the front lines of “decency” battles than the Catholic Legion of Decency, later renamed the National Legion of Decency. They went all the way to the Supreme Court to argue for the right to ban films deemed “sacrilegious.”

Turner Classic Movies is going to show a series of films deemed “indecent” to let people judge for themselves what they think is appropriate. These films are quite mild in most respects by today’s standards, with the kind of material often shown on broadcast television. Not all of the films on the schedule are classics, but all are worth watching to see how standards change over time, and also to see some great stars and great performances.

TCM 31 Days of Oscar 2016

Posted on January 29, 2016 at 3:20 pm

I look forward to Turner Classic Movies’ 31 Days of Oscar every year in the month before the Oscar telecast. It is so much fun to see the nominees and winners from past years, not just for the big acting, directing, and screenplay awards but also the nominees and winners for costume design, cinematography, editing, and more.

And they’ve made it even more special this year! This will be a lot of fun for movie nerds like me. Each movie will have a connection with the one that follows it by an actor in common. It will be a lot of fun to follow along and trace the careers of some of our favorite performers.
