Tribute: Sesame Street’s Jerry Nelson

Posted on August 24, 2012 at 8:29 pm

We bid a sad farewell to Jerry Nelson of Sesame Street, and the Muppets, who has died at age 78.  He will probably be best remembered for providing the voice of The Count.

He was also featured as Sherlock Hemlock.

Lisa Henson, daughter of Muppet founder Jim Henson, said,  “Jerry Nelson imbued all his characters with the same gentle, sweet whimsy and kindness that were a part of his own personality. He joined the Jim Henson Co. in the earliest years, and his unique contributions to the worlds of Fraggles, Muppets, Sesame Street and so many others are, and will continue to be, unforgettable. On behalf of the Henson family and everyone at the Jim Henson Co., our deepest sympathies go out to Jerry’s family and to his many fans.”

May his memory be a blessing.

Fall TV 2012

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 3:48 pm

Every season now brings new television programs and returns of favorite series, but I grew up in the old days and for me the fall TV season is still the most exciting.  Here are some of the new shows that look especially intriguing:

Elementary This latest version of Sherlock Holmes is set in modern times and Dr. Watson is played by Lucy Liu.  Sherlock is Jonny Lee Miller.

Emily Owens, M.D. Mamie Gummer, who looks just like her mother, Meryl Streep, was terrific on “The Good Wife,” and I am looking forward to seeing her as a young doctor in this medical drama.

Malibu Country The premise is not promising — woman leaves her cheating husband to start over — but this one stars Reba McEntire and Lily Tomlin, so I hope it’s worthy of them.

The Mindy Project Mindy Kaling, who co-wrote and appeared on “The Office,” created and stars in this new series about a doctor who has a soft spot for romantic comedy.
