One of the best movies of the year makes a king look like an underdog in the true story of a man who had to literally and metaphorically find his voice, with in a very real sense the fate of the world depending on it.
kings-speech-34.jpgIt wasn’t because she didn’t love him, she explains, when she turned down his proposal of marriage twice. It was because he was a prince, a member of the British royal family, and she did not want to live a public life. And then she remembered that she did love him. And that he had a stammer, so she concluded that would keep him on the sidelines. And then she married him, and they had two children. And then he became king.
The Duke of York (Colin Firth), known as Bertie to his family, was an almost-ideal second son in the royal family. He served honorably in the military and took his public duties seriously. He had no interest his brother David’s position as the heir to the throne. But then three things happened. First, radio was invented, and all of a sudden a dignified wave was not enough. For the first time, all of Great Britain (encompassing, at that time, one quarter of the developed world) could hear the voice of their leaders. Second, Hitler’s aggression was making war inevitable.
And third, Bertie’s brother David, by then King Edward VIII, would shatter precedent and become the first ruler in British history to resign, in royal terms, to abdicate, so that he would be free to marry an American divorcee named Wallis Simpson. Just at the moment when the British people most needed to hear their king, they had a king who could not TIFF-Kings-Speech-colin_firth_helena_bonham_carter_kings_speech4.jpgspeak.
The best doctors had been consulted, and Bertie had been subjected to treatment that literally went back to Demosthenes. And then the Duchess brought him to Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an Australian actor who had worked with the shell-shocked veterans of WWI. As an actor, he knew breathing techniques and other exercises to help make the spoken word smooth and compelling. And his work with the veterans showed him that the relationship between the therapist and the stutterer — and sometimes the opportunity to talk about the stutterer’s experiences and fears — could be very important.
And so Bertie has, for the first time ever, conversations with someone outside his family. He desperately wants to maintain his dignity, but he even more desperately wants to be able to play this increasingly more crucial role.
The movie may be sepia tones and British accents but it is not at all stuffy thanks to Firth, Rush and Helena Bonham Carter as his wife. Firth shows us Bertie’s struggles to locate his voice and define his role. In one scene, when he tells his little girls (including the current Queen Elizabeth) a bedtime story, it is almost unbearably touching because it means so much to him and the story is so self-deprecatory and loving. People who have trouble speaking spend a lot of time listening and observing. Bertie watches his father and brother with deference, a need for approval, and also a thoughtful evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses as though he is measuring them as a way of creating himself.
The heart of the film is Bertie’s meetings with Lionel, and they are a marvel. Screenwriter David Seidler, himself a one-time stutterer whose uncle was treated by Lionel, worked on the screenplay for decades (the Queen Mother asked that it not be produced until after her death), and it is a masterwork that merits all that went into it. At age 72, Seidler knows what it is to find one’s voice.

‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life to Live’ Canceled

ABC has announced that it is canceling two soap operas, “All My Children” and “One Life to Live.”  These daytime dramas go back decades — “All My Children” premiered in January 0f 1970 and “One Life to Live” in July of 1968.  Both were created by the legendary Agnes Nixon, who began her career with Irna Phillips, the original creator of the idea of the soap opera, back in the radio era.  They had all of the core elements that Phillips pioneered: intertwined, open-ended stories of marriage and family, filled with romance, tragedy, betrayal, suffering, secrets, and lies, but always with a sense of hope and resilience.   They give their devoted fans a chance to see characters get older in real time over generations.

When they began, “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” were cutting edge.  “All My Children” was designed to focus on the younger characters, a reflection of the 60’s era baby boomers who were coming of age and having an enormous impact on politics and popular culture.  Some of its main characters were teenagers, including Erica Kane (future legend Susan Lucci), who became pregnant and had television’s first legal abortion, when she was married to her first husband, Jeff Martin.  Erica would go on to get married somewhere around ten more times, though not all of the marriages were valid.  How many of her husbands can you name?  “One Life to Live” was created to reflect the heightened interest in racial and social conflicts.  Nixon said she was “tired of the restraints imposed by the WASPy, noncontroversial nature of daytime drama.”  The two shows exist in the same fictional world and characters have appeared in both.

At one time, the daytime schedules were filled with soap operas (the name comes from their sponsors –makers of laundry detergent and other household cleaners — and the epic nature of their plot lines).  But they are expensive to produce, requiring writers, actors, sets (mansions, hospitals, courtrooms), and lots of make-up and hair artists.  They are being replaced by a couple of talk shows — “The Chew” (really) will be a “View”-style show about food.  And, just to balance it out, “The Revolution,” a weight-loss and fitness show.  They’ll never last as long or earn the dedication as “All My Children?”‘ and “One Life to Live.”

Screen-Free Week April 18-24

It used to be called TV-Turnoff Week but that was so 1990’s.  Now it’s Screen-Free Week — one week for families to turn off the screens and reconnect with old-fashioned in-person interaction, to look each other in the eyes, spend time outside, cook together, read books on paper, daydream, play board games and cards, and, perhaps most important, go for more than 20 seconds without being interrupted by buzzing, beeping, ring-tones, or tweets.  It’s also a chance to participate in the many Screen-Free Week events organized around the country.  The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood has a fact sheet for kids and resources for parents and teachers, including an excellent Live Outside the Box Toolkit from Seattle and King County.  Screen-Free Week is endorsed by a wide range of educators and health professionals including the American Medical Association, the National Education Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

I was disappointed to see Double X blogger KJ Dell’Antonia explain why she and her family will not be observing Screen-Free Week, apparently because it is inconvenient. Without television as a soporofic,

my four children will be running wild around me, invariably losing their generally excellent ability to self-entertain and peacefully interact at approximately 5:00 daily, precisely the moment when I’m desperately trying to finish up the last bits of work for the day and start dinner—without once resorting to the highly addictive, all-child-inclusive form of entertainment that is Phineas and Ferb.

She doesn’t try to suggest that there is anything beneficial to her children in her decision.  It is Dell’Antonia who wants to continue to rely on television to keep her children quiet and does not even want to take one week to try to teach them that they have other alternatives — like reading a book, drawing a picture, playing a game, or setting the table.  She has to admit, “I support the idea of a “screen-free week,” but I support it as a family project, not a top-down imposition of a temporary new screen rule.”  The entire idea of Screen-Free Week is as a family project.  I am certain that children will be so happy to have their parents put down their Blackberries that they will be more than willing to miss another rerun of Phineas and Ferb and that it is well worth it for everyone to learn that media is not the only way to spend quiet time.
