Cinderella’s Costumes — A Lot of Sewing and A Little Movie Magic

Posted on March 14, 2015 at 8:00 am

In Disney’s animated version, Cinderella has some very handy mice to help sew her dress for the ball.  The costumes for this week’s live-action version, designed by Sandy Powell, required the work of many, many humans.  For the wedding dress alone, shown in just one short scene, 16 people sewed for 550 hours to create a gown Powell designed to suit the characters modest simplicity.  The story’s most famous detail is the glass slippers Cinderella’s fairy godmother creates for to her wear to the ball.  In this version, the shoes were made of Swarovski crystal, because “glass does not sparkle,” Powell told Vanity Fair.  But crystal doesn’t work for actual shoes that go on actual feet.  So, the shoes worn by actress Lily James were converted by movie magic — CGI.

Powell, nominated for 10 Oscars and winner of 3, Powell worked on the film for almost two years before it began filming.  My favorite costumes in the film are the dramatic hats and dresses worn by Cate Blanchett as the wicked stepmother.  Powell’s work has a magic all its own.

MPAA Ratings and Community Differences on Sex and Violence

Posted on March 13, 2015 at 3:24 pm

Joan Graves heads up the MPAA’s ratings board and she is the only member whose name is public. She talked to The Wrap about some intriguing regional difference in views on sex and violence.

“The South is concerned about using the Lord’s name in vain. They’d like to see the improper use of ‘Jesus Christ’ draw an automatic R,” Graves said. “In the Midwest it’s the nudity and sex, and on the coasts there is greater interest in the violence.”

A New Trailer for “Tomorrowland”

Posted on March 13, 2015 at 9:00 am

This is our first real glimpse at “Tomorrowland” from Brad Bird (“The Incredibles” and “The Iron Giant”). I love the way it incorporates the 1950’s aesthetics of what the future would look like. This looks like it’s going to be amazing.

Do you know which character has been most often portrayed in movies? Hint: there are now two different but both very popular television series about this character as well. Of course it is Sherlock Holmes. Yet another Sherlock Holmes movie is coming our way, starring Ian McKellen and Laura Linney, and I have to say it looks great.
