New on PBS: Mack and Moxy Teach Kids About Compassion, Learning, and Helping Others
Posted on April 19, 2016 at 3:30 pm
These days even adults can feel frustrated at the prospect of trying to find a good way to help others. So it is especially welcome that a new television series for kids has some gentle lessons about making a difference to spread kindness and generosity. Mack and Moxy is a great new PBS show for kids about compassion, empathy, heroes, and helping others.
Kate & Mim-Mim was actually created by a husband and wife and is based on their daughter Kate and her stuffed bunny rabbit. Kate’s riding her bike for the first time without training wheels and she keeps falling. In Mimiloo, Kate and her friends must learn to fly giant wind flowers in order to surprise Lily at her Spring Thing party! But Mim-Mim has never flown a flower before, and Kate must help him gain his confidence to become a fully-fledged flower pilot.
I have a copy to give away — with a special surprise extra toy!
Send me an email at moviemom@moviemom.com with Kate in the subject line and tell me your favorite flower. Don’t forget your address! (U.S. addresses only). I’ll pick a winner at random on March 8, 2016. Good luck!

Join newly promoted Captain Jake as he unites Never Land’s all-time greatest pirates! When evil mer-witch Ezmeralda tries to take over the Never Sea by awakening the Strake, a legendary three-headed sea serpent, Jake and his crew try to intervene but encounter Lord Fathom and his sidekick Sinker. Jake forms a team of “Never Land League of Pirate Captains” to battle them all and in the process, outfitted with a magical new sword and a powerful new ship, (the Mighty Colossus), he becomes a Captain himself. Loaded with excitement, additional adventures and a powerful message about believing in yourself, this high-stakes, high-seas adventure is oceans of swashbuckling fun for everyone!
What if all the action heroes who saved the world, day in and day out… were girls?
Only 12% of protagonists in major Hollywood films are female. Even in the background, in crowded wide shots, women only make up about 17% of those shown in live action and animated movies. Among the highest grossing G-rated films of all time, female characters are outnumbered by male characters by three to one.
Move behind the camera and the numbers are sadly similar: in 2014, only 15% of films had female directors, 20% had female writers, and a mere 8% had female cinematographers.
50% of the population is female.
This is a problem.
We’re not here to produce the next blockbuster; we’re here to provide a role model in play. When the girls in your life pick up Ruby Rails, we want them to know that they can be a high-flying, fashion-loving programming extraordinaire too. We want them to feel like they can be a boxer, a secret agent, a dinosaur wrangler, or a fighter pilot.
Our girls deserve action heroes with flowing hair and combat boots. Our girls deserve to see themselves on-screen and calling the shots behind the scenes. Our girls deserve more.
“Owlegories” is a new “gospel-centered” animated series and app for kids, designed to teach them about God through the amazing things found in nature. They are Biblical allegories told by owls.
It is a bright, colorful, and accessible series.
I have a copy to give away! Send me an email at moviemom@moviemom.com with Owl in the subject line and tell me your favorite bird. Don’t forget your address! (US addresses only). I’ll pick a winner at random on November 10, 2015. Good luck!
