The Original “Please Mr. Kennedy” Song

Posted on January 8, 2014 at 9:53 pm

My favorite movie of 2013 is “Inside Llewyn Davis,” and I love the scene where the very serious folksinger title character (Oscar Isaac) gets hired as a studio musician to perform a silly novelty song. Justin Timberlake plays the musician who wrote the song, “Please Mr. Kennedy.” It’s about a guy who says he does not want to be sent into space. This was, of course, the early days of the space race, with Alan Shepard the first American and second person to go up in a space capsule in 1961, the year this movie takes place.

There was a real “Please Mr. Kennedy” song back in the 60’s, a similar theme, but it was about not wanting to be sent to Vietnam. This was long before the angry protests of the late-60’s anti-war movement, with much more powerful songs like the “Feel-Like-I’m-Fixing-to-Die Rag” sung by Country Joe and the Fish. This was just a light-hearted song from Mickey Woods. Here it is:

The Cast of “The Good Wife” Dances to Thicky Trick

Posted on January 7, 2014 at 9:33 am

Here’s a treat to warm up this cold snap!  This week’s case on “The Good Wife” concerned the use of a song on a “Glee”-style television show.  The cast decided to engage in some very un-courtroom-like behavior.  I got a special kick out of seeing Christine Baranski, who has danced in movies like “Mamma Mia!” and “Birdcage” and on stage, bopping along with her hair in curlers.

Posted on December 29, 2013 at 8:00 am

bortnick anything is possibleStart the new year with a heartwarming family film starring musical prodigy Ethan Bortnick, who wrote the songs he performs in this film  “Anything is Possible”  is the story of ten-year-old Nathan (Bortnick), who is devastated when his mom is reported missing while serving on an overseas Army rescue mission. Feeling scared and alone, Nathan runs away from home only to find shelter from the city streets at a local orphanage. There, Nathan’s incredible talent at the piano is discovered, and he becomes the star attraction at a benefit concert to raise money for the orphanage. Inspired by the kindness of the people he met on his journey, Nathan holds on to the belief that his mom will come home and his family will be reunited. This heartwarming story proves that with love, compassion, selflessness and hope, anything is possible.
