Savages

Oliver Stone’s new movie about drug dealers and drug users seems to assume that its audiences may be watching in an altered state of consciousness as well.  Stone has never been known for subtlety, but just to make absolutely sure that everyone watching the film knows what is what, he makes a very clear distinction between our heroes and our villains.  The good drug dealers are two guys and a girl who live together in an almost Edenic state of polyamorous bliss on Laguna Beach and donate money to African villages.  The villains are the bad drug dealers, who chain-saw off the heads of seven people before the opening credits are over and are led by viciously evil Selma Hayek with a hairstyle that makes her look like a demented Veronica from the Archie Comics.

Our narrator cautions us that just because she is telling the story does not mean she is alive at the end of it.  O (for Ophelia) is a California girl from a wealthy but dysfunctional family whose primary occupations are shopping and having sex with her two boyfriends.  Chon (Taylor Kitsch) is the muscle, a cynical former military guy.  Ben (Aaron Johnson of “Kick-Ass”) is the idealistic botany/business guy.  Together, O tells us, they make the perfect boyfriend, and they love each other, too, so it’s just one happy cuddle puddle.

But the very thing that makes them so successful — the exceptional quality of their weed — has made them a threat to the big, bad drug dealers from Mexico.  When they make an offer Ben and Chon can’t refuse, Ben and Chon refuse anyway.  They are willing to turn over the business but they are not willing to work for Elena (Hayek) and her group.  So O gets taken hostage, and if Ben and Chon do not start cooperating, they will chop off her fingers.

When O and Elena have an elegant dinner and O starts prattling on about her failed effort at community college as though she is talking to her parents’ friends at the country club, we get a sense of the grand guignol possibilities of this story, based on novel by Don Winslow, who co-scripted.  Hayek’s relish in the role is entertaining and John Travolta has a good turn as a paunchy FBI agent with no illusions.  But Benicio de Toro’s portrayal of Elena’s sociopathic henchman is just icky.  Stone’s re-re-re-treading of the same issues that have pre-occupied him since he was fighting in Vietnam — drugs, corruption, military, power — is tired.  The butchery and dissolution of the bad guys is over the top and the heroes give us no reason to root for them.  A final fake-out is an insult to any remaining goodwill left from the audience and the overall preposterousness finally feels like an insult.

 

Parents should know that this film has extremely graphic and disturbing violence including torture and rape, explicit sexual situations, nudity, drinking, smoking, extended drug use (marijuana and cocaine) and drug dealing, very strong language

Family discussion:  Why do the different characters refer to each other as savages?  Do you agree with  the definition used at the end?  What kept O, John, and Ben together?

Battleship

As if it wasn’t enough of a challenge to try to create a movie based on a board game — and a board game based on a game that is perfectly adequately played with pencil and paper — this movie has to find its way around the fact that the large armored warships that give the game and the movie its title have been out of commission as everything but museum pieces for decades, replaced by much more powerful ships called destroyers.  And yet, director Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”) and screenwriters Eric and Jon Hoeber (“Red“) have somehow managed to add some aliens and a lot of explosions to create a good, old-fashioned summer popcorn movie that is good, old-fashioned fun.

They give us half an hour to meet the main characters.  Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch, thankfully making it possible to overlook “John Carter“) is an impetuous but gallant young man.  His brother Stone (“True Blood’s” Alexander Skarsgård), a naval officer frustrated with Alex’s lack of direction, insists that Alex get some discipline and join the navy.  A couple of years later, Stone is a commander and Alex is a promising but still-impetuous lieutenant in love with Samantha (Brooklyn Decker), the daughter of the admiral (Liam Neeson).  In the midst of an event called RIMPAC that is like an Olympics of international naval operations, just after Alex gets in trouble for a scuffle with a Japanese naval officer (Tadanobu Asano), something happens that is not part of the program.  For four years, a program called the Beacon Project has been sending signals to a planet that is similar to earth and capable of supporting life in the hope of making contact.  The signals have been seen as an invitation and the inhabitants of the other planet have arrived, like Columbus.  And, as a character points out, if they are Columbus, we — all of humanity — are the the Indians.  Except it is more like Columbus arriving with  an armored brigade and bombs that slice through destroyers like bullets through tissue paper.  And they operate a enormous rockets that operate like Decepticons the size of the Chrysler Building in a world with no Optimus Primes.

The Battleship board game involves trying to guess where the other player’s warships are hidden by calling out squares on a grid, and the Hoebers find a witty way to make that a part of the story, and to bring in a real battleship, too.  There’s more than just bang-bang.  Alex comes up with some clever, way-out-of-the box tactics and Rihanna is a hoot as a determined petty officer weapons specialist.  And in a cute variation on the whole “ET phone home” thing, the aliens need to get to the Beacon Project communication center.  The only people who can stop them are none other than the beautiful daughter of the admiral and a wounded warrior she happens to have been trying to inspire by taking him for a bit of a mountain climb.  He is played by real-life West Point graduate Gregory D. Gadson, a double leg amputee, in a performance adding some nicely quiet dignity to the story.  There is not much quiet or dignity in the rest of the movie, but Berg stages the action scenes with kinetic energy and a sure sense of fun.  (And be sure to stay all the way through the credits for an extra scene.)

Parents should know that this movie has non-stop action-style violence with aliens, many explosions and military battles, characters injured and killed, and some strong language (s-words, muffled f-words).

Pixar’s First Live Action Movie

After ten blockbuster movies that transformed the world of animation, Pixar has announced its first live action film, based on the outer-space series by “Tarzan” author Edgar Rice Burroughs, The Adventures of John Carter on Mars. It will star Taylor Kitsch of “Friday Night Lights” and Lynn Collins, a brilliantly talented actress I have admired since she played Portia in the Al Pacino “A Merchant of Venice.” John Carter is a Civil War Veteran who gets caught up in a war on Mars. The script is by Andrew Staunton, who also wrote “Finding Nemo,” “Toy Story 2,” and “A Bug’s Life,” and Michael Chabon of “Wonder Boys” and “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” and Staunton is also set to direct. Doesn’t that sound magnificent!
