Posted on September 3, 2014 at 3:46 pm

I’m really looking forward to “Sonic Highways,” a new HBO series premiering in October.  Dave Grohl crosses the country with the Foo Fighters to make music, recording a different track in each studio, and talks to a wide range of musicians and studio technicians along the way, including Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Joan Jett, and Bonnie Raitt.

Angels Sing stars Harry Connick, Jr. as Michael Walker, who, as a child, wished every day was Christmas, until a tragic accident crushed his holiday spirit. Thirty years later Michael still can’t muster any joy for Christmas despite encouragement from his playful wife (Connie Britton) and well intentioned parents (Kris Kristofferson and Fionnula Flanagan).  But when his young son (Chandler Canterbury) faces a tragedy, Michael needs to make amends with his past.  A mysterious man named Nick (Willie Nelson) gives Michael a gift that instills in him the courage to find the Christmas joy that he lost.

Angels Sing will be out next week on DVD/Blu-Ray and is already available on VOD.

Three Songs About September

Posted on September 1, 2013 at 3:59 pm

Happy September!  Here are three of my favorite songs paying tribute to this month.

Many people have sung the haunting Kurt Weill “September Song,” originally introduced by Walter Huston (father of director John Huston and grandfather to Anjelica and Danny Huston) in an otherwise-forgotten musical called “Knickerbocker Holiday.”  But no one, not even Frank Sinatra, sings it better than Willie Nelson.

The longest-running play in the world is the sweet musical “The Fantastiks,” featuring this bittersweet song, “Try to Remember.”  It was introduced in 1960 by Jerry Orbach.  Here he is, 22 years later.

The Tempos originally recorded “See You in September” in 1959, but the harmonies made it perfect for The Happenings.

“From Dust to Dreams” PBS Concert Special

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 8:00 am

Neil Patrick Harris hosts an all-star concert special to be shown on PBS next week, celebrating the opening of the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert features superstars from the world of country music (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Martina McBride), Broadway (Brian Stokes Mitchell, Laura Osnes, Cheyenne Jackson, Sherie Rene Scott, Montego Glover, and Benjamin Walker), pop (Jennifer Hudson, Carole King, Train’s Pat Monahan), ballet (Marcello Gomes and Luciana Paris), classical (Joshua Bell, Arturo Sandoval), and gospel (Mavis Staples).  The highlights include duets and trios — Staples and King perform King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” and she is joined by Hudson and McBride for “Natural Woman.”  Haggard and Nelson sing “Pancho & Lefty” and are joined by Emmylou Harris for Haggard’s classic “Ramblin’ Fever.”

Be sure to tune in Friday, September 21 at 9 (8 Central) for a rare treat.
