“Wreck-It Ralph” — A Commercial for the Litwak Arcade

Posted on October 24, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Disney’s upcoming “Wreck-It Ralph” is the story of a 70’s-era 8-bit video game character who is tired of being the bad guy and escapes to try out other games.  Disney has released this very cute commercial that almost makes it seem that Wreck-It Ralph really was in those old arcades between Super Mario and Ms. Pac-Man.

Big Bird Halloween Costumes — The Good, The Bad, and The Very, Very Yellow

Posted on October 24, 2012 at 8:00 am

Mitt Romney’s comment about cutting funding for PBS at the first Presidential debate has made Big Bird one of the most popular costumes for Halloween this year.  But that’s not all good news.  The Children’s Television Workshop, producers of “Sesame Street,” sent a cease-and-desist letter to the company behind a “sexy big bird” costume.  It’s not just a matter of licensing revenues and copyright protection.  The characters who are important to children should not be trashed by being sexualized.

Gabe the Cupid Dog

Posted on October 23, 2012 at 11:11 pm

A dog named Gabe plays Cupid for his newly single master in this sweet family-friendly story.  Gabe belongs to Eric (Brian Krause of “Charmed”) a journalist planning a move to the UK.  But animals have to be quarantined for six months before they can enter the country and Gabe really doesn’t want that.  So he has to figure out a reason for Eric to stay home, and decides his best bet is to find him a new girlfriend.  A pretty neighbor named Sarah (Boti Bliss of “CSI: Miami”) seems like a good candidate.  There are complications along the way but Gabe is on hand to make sure that it all ends happily ever after.

Re-Broadcast: Monsters vs. Alien Debate

Posted on October 23, 2012 at 8:00 am

Listen in to a special Halloween re-broadcast of my debate with A.J. Hakari on Betty Jo Tucker’s Movie Addict Headquarters show.  Which has provided more entertainment value over the years?  On one side, “Alien,” “E.T.,” and “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”  On the other, “Frankenstein,” “The Mummy,” and “The Wolfman.”  And many more.  Thank goodness outside of a debate we don’t really have to choose!

Opening This Week: Cloud Atlas, Fun Size, Chasing Mavericks

Posted on October 22, 2012 at 3:55 pm

After a slow week at the box office, things pick up with a prestige film with star power on both sides of the camera, a family-friendly surfing story, and a less family-friendly film from Nickelodeon.

Tom Hanks and Halle Berry star in “Cloud Atlas,” based on the “unfilmable” book by David Mitchell that takes the reader back and forth through six different stories from the past, present, and future, mixed up with philosophy, history, science, and puzzles.  This is a dream project for the Wachowskis, the sibling duo behind the “Matrix” films, and Tom Twyker of “Run Lola Run.”  From an 18th century seagoing vessel to a 1930’s musician, a 1970’s reporter, a present-day publisher, and a future  society with clones, the story is ambitious, demanding, and provocative.

“Fun Size” comes from Nickelodeon, but parents should be cautious as it a PG-13-rated story of a high school senior who gets stuck babysitting her brother on Halloween when she wants to go to a party with her friends.  She loses her brother trick-or-treating and has some wild adventures with her friends trying to find him before their mother finds out.

Making Mavericks: The Memoir of a Surfing Legend is a memoir by Richard “Frosty” Hesson about mentoring a young surfer named Jay Moriarity who wanted to learn to surf the gigantic waves known as “mavericks” and his commitment to living life with “joy and purpose.”  “Chasing Mavericks” is the story of the friendship between the two surfers, directed by Curtis Hanson (“LA Confidential,” “Wonder Boys”).
