Beliefnet Channel on Hulu

Posted on June 3, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Be sure to check out Beliefnet’s channel on Hulu. Highlights include “The End of the Spear,” based on the true story of the widows of missionaries killed by one of the most brutal tribes in the world, who chose forgiveness, bringing their children to become a part of the community that had murdered their husbands and fathers. I interviewed Steve Saint, the son of one of the men who was killed, who grew up with the tribe, and he spoke eloquently about forgiveness and what inspires him.

Forgiveness obviously looms large in the story of Saint’s life and is a subject he has thought about at length. To befriend his father’s killer, he said he didn’t necessarily need to understand what happened or why.

“It might be helpful, but I’m a fan of one particular book and in that book, God sent his Son down not when we were perfect but when we were not,” Saint said. “God did not do it because we were ready or because we asked for him, but because we needed him.”

Beliefnet’s other sections include One Year, about snowboarding, and Miss HIV, about three different battles against prejudice, including an extraordinary African beauty competition for woman with HIV.

Happy Birthday YouTube

Posted on June 2, 2010 at 8:00 am

Can it be that YouTube is only five years old? It began in May of 2005 and was bought by Google for $1.6 billion just over a year later.

Now it has twice as many viewers every day as all three television broadcast networks combined. It has fundamentally changed the way we share our lives with each other.

Of course, YouTube celebrated by creating an anniversary channel for users to upload their tributes. “Guest curators” like Katie Couric, director Pedro Almodovar, and Conan O’Brien posted their all-time favorites. And fan favorites like the “Lonely Girl” are back with their thoughts and updates.

Here are a few of my all-time favorite YouTube classics. I’d be glad to hear about yours.

Write Your Screenplay!

Posted on May 22, 2010 at 8:00 am

Ever watch a movie and think you could write a better one? Here’s your chance, without having to invest in pricey screenwriting software. Plotbot is a nifty web-based interface that walks you through the mechanics of screenwriting, handles all of the tricky formatting issues, and even allows you to collaborate privately or publicly. There are a lot of other great resources for writers online, including this discussion from Kurt Vonnegut about why we need drama (with charts!), Screenwriting Tips, and Scriptologist.
Give it a try, and if your film gets made, remember to thank me in your Oscar acceptance speech!
