Tribute: Donna Summer

Posted on May 17, 2012 at 12:36 pm

We mourn the loss of disco diva and five-time Grammy winner Donna Summer, whose anthems like “Last Dance” and “Hot Stuff” helped define an era.   She died at age 63 from cancer.  Her songs were featured in a number of movies, most memorably in “The Full Monty,” “Roll Bounce,” “Zoolander,” and “Charlie Wilson’s War” as well as episodes of “Sex and the City” and “The Simpsons.”  Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines, she performed in the European cast of the original production of “Hair,” sang in a rock band, and was a back-up singer for Three Dog Night.  Her powerful voice was perfect for the disco era, when she became the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the US Billboard chart.  May her memory be a blessing.

Paul McCartney’s “My Valentine” Music Video with Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp Signing

Posted on April 22, 2012 at 8:00 am

This beautifully balletic version of Paul MCartney’s new song, “My Valentine” features Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp performing in sign language.  The song is featured in McCartney’s new standards collection, Kisses on the Bottom.

NOTE: Do not pay attention to some internet allegations of incorrect or crude unintended words in the signing.  US and UK sign language is different and there are also regional and individual variations, just as with spoken speech.

Tribute: Dick Clark

Posted on April 19, 2012 at 9:37 am

“The world’s oldest teenager,” Dick Clark, passed away this week at age 82.  He is best remembered as the host of “American Bandstand” and the Pyramid game show, but the scope of his influence on broadcasting and entertainment goes much further.  From Elvis to Madonna, disco to hip-hop, he helped popularize almost every recording industry superstar.  He was a pioneer in syndication, he created the American Music Awards, he popularized “bloopers,” and he rocked a lot of New Year’s Eves.  May his memory be a blessing.  Here he is with the Jackson 5ive.
