Amazing New Movie Technologies

Posted on January 9, 2013 at 3:59 pm

It seems like something from “The Jetsons,” but according to The Creators Project, these new technologies will help us literally see and make movies in new ways very soon, including 3D without glasses, laser projection for sharper, more high-contrast images, and “4D,” with smoke and wind machines in the theater to make you feel that you are a part of what is going on in the film.  I am excited about the new smaller cameras that will give filmmakers the chance to make films in new locations and with lower budgets, less excited about apps that just encourage viewers to multi-task while watching a film.

3D “Swan Lake” in Theaters on March 20

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Audiences across the country will have a chance to watch Matthew Bourne’s critically acclaimed re-interpretation of one of ballet’s classic stories, Swan Lake in 3D, shown exclusively in RealD™ 3D, in select theaters on Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. local time. Perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble, Swan Lake in 3D was pre-recorded at Sadler’s Wells, London in 2011 with a stellar cast including the magnificent Richard Winsor as the lead Swan/Stranger, Dominic North as The Prince and Nina Goldman as The Queen. Edgy and dramatic, Bourne’s Swan Lake tells the eternal story of tragic and forbidden love with dynamic, modern day flair, making this production a one-of-a-kind experience for ballet and performing arts fans alike.

Tickets are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. For a complete list of theater locations and prices, visit the NCM Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change). This presentation will be broadcast to select movie theaters through NCM’s exclusive Digital Broadcast Network.

More Disney/Pixar Classics Coming to Theaters in 3D

Posted on October 4, 2011 at 8:00 pm

The success of “Lion King 3D” has led Disney/Pixar to move forward with theatrical 3D releases for some of its other family favorites.  Look for Beauty and the Beast in 3D, finally, in theaters January 13th, 2012.  My favorite Pixar film, Finding Nemo,  will be out on September 14th, 2012, and Pixar’s Monsters Inc. in theaters on January 18th, 2013, which is just 6 months before the release of the forthcoming prequel “Monsters University,” that summer.  And The Little Mermaid is also getting a 3D release on September 13th, 2013.

Is there a Disney classic you’d like to see in 3D?

More 3D Conversions: Top Gun is Next

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 3:33 pm

The re-release of “The Lion King” in 3D is coming this month and now the Hollywood Reporter says that “Top Gun” is being adapted for a 3D release.  Apparently, director Tony Scott has not yet given his approval.

As I noted on Ebert Presents At the Movies, there’s a world of difference between films shot in 3D and those converted to 3D after they have been shot with 2D cameras.  I don’t think there’s any benefit at all from releasing a well-known film in an obviously-converted format, do you?
