A Book on Every Bed: Amy Dickinson

Posted on December 18, 2013 at 3:51 pm

I love Amy Dickinson’s idea of “A Book on Every Bed,” a wonderful way to start Christmas (or any other special occasion).

Here’s how it works: You take a book (it can be new or a favorite from your own childhood).

You wrap it. On Christmas Eve (or whatever holiday you celebrate), you leave the book in a place where Santa is likely to find it. When I communicated with David McCullough about borrowing his idea, he was very clear: Santa handles the delivery and places the book on a child’s bed.

In the morning, the children in your household will awaken to a gift that will far outlast any toy: a guided path into the world of stories.

I know this for sure: No matter who you are or what you do, reading will unlock untold opportunities, mysteries and passions.

When you have a book and the ability to tell, read and share stories, you gain access to the universe of others’ imaginations. And avid readers know that if you have a book, you are never alone.

Please start this tradition with your family.  It will give your children the enduring pleasure of the magic of books.

Contest: Merry Christmas, Splat

Posted on November 29, 2013 at 8:00 am

I am delighted to be able to give away a copy of the adorable Merry Christmas Splat & More Winter Stories, from my very favorite series for kids, Scholastic Storybook Treasures.

Splat the cat is worried that he hasn’t been as good as he’d hoped on Christmas Eve.   In Fletcher and the Snowflake Christmas, the little fox and his rabbit friends are worried that Santa won’t be able to reach them.  More soft white stuff falls in Snowflake Bentley, in this true story about the pioneering scientist who studied water crystals.  And in Owl Moon, and owl and his daughter go exploring together.

Send me an email at moviemom@moviemom.com with Snow in the subject line and tell me your favorite winter activity.  Don’t forget your address!  (US addresses only)  I’ll pick a winner at random on December 5.  Good luck!

Goldieblox Rocks! Hurray for Girls Who Think and Build

Hurray for Goldieblox for knowing that girls want to think and invent and problem solve and that they don’t always want everything to be pink and princessy!  The company was created by Debbie Sterling, a female engineer from Stanford University.  I also like the way the girls own their own version of the Beastie Boys’ song, “Girls.”

Children will also enjoy Rosie Revere, Engineer. Rosie is named for her great-great Aunt Rose, of Rosie the Riveter fame.

Emotional ABC’s Teach Children to Recognize Feelings In Themselves and Others

Posted on October 5, 2013 at 2:28 pm

We spend so much time worrying about teaching our children reading and math that we can overlook the importance of teaching them to recognize and handle emotions in themselves and others.  So I like the new resources from Emotional ABC’s, especially the way they help parents teach children to identify their feelings, “rewind” to figure out how they got there, and then think about the best way to communicate and resolve the issues by making good choices.  I also like the way they promote empathy by teaching children to recognize the indicators of fear, anger, hurt feelings, and other emotions and moods in others, and how to respond sensitively.  The activity books help families talk about complicated and sensitive issues in an honest and constructive manner.
